So today I entered the minefield that is display port cables.

The ones on ocuk appear to be of an old design.

So looked elsewhere they seem to be mostly dodgy Chinese brands I've never heard of, and reviews seem to be all.over the place.

I'll be running a 1440p monitor with a 144hz capabilities and hopefully a 6800xt graphics card.

So I think I've settled on a 1.4b cable.

I know people can't put links other than ocuk on here but what brands are you using?

There's really only one thing you need to look for in a DP cable: the bandwidth. This might be stated by its name as per the DP standard, like "HBR" or "HBR2", or in GB/s, or as a maximum resolution, like "4K 60Hz". There's a table on the Wikipedia article for DisplayPort that lets you easily work out how much bandwidth you need.

There are lots of poor quality cables out there, certainly. I would hope that any cable purchased from a reputable retailer would live up to its specs though, regardless of brand. Looking at the many cables I have, very few have a brand written on them (some are Samsung, which came with monitors, and a couple from Startech), so it's hard to say which ones I know to work well.

Thanks, that pretty much sums up what I thought, there are lots of poor quality cables around. Seems like I'll just have to take a chance.

I bought an Ivanky one off "that" site for just over £8. To be fair I'm using it at 1440p but on a 60Hz monitor but it's made nicely enough and specs say 165 for 1440p though....

Over what distance? Things may have changed but I found that high bandwidth Displayport got twitchy on copper cables when over 3 metres. So I switched to fibre-optic cables. These cost a lot of money back - £179 a pop - then but you can now get a 15m DP1.4 32.4 Gbps cable for £70. That sounds a lot but consider this: you are spending several hundred on a GPU and several hundred on a monitor, so why scrimp on the cable that connects the two? Do note that Displayport 2.x with 80 Gbps bandwidth is in the offing and I haven't seen any DP 2 fibre cables.

I wanted a 3 metre cable.

Got one from an online store that begins with A in the end, it's their own one and is 1.4b, the cable is stupendously thick
