Mini Cooper S fanboy is back.

If it floats your boat, buy it.

I want one, if I could afford one.

But I went in one in the show room the other week and its not as nice as I remembered when I drove one when learning. The car feels bigger than it is, it doesn't feel small. There's also quite a lot of plastic...not nice plastic either. That dash looks like its made from £5 analogue clock from Argos for a start.

You think the mini looks cheap? You should check out the clio interiors!

No, don't really think the DC5 is that 'chav' either but then neither is a Mini Cooper S. I was just pointing out the hypocricy of the bilge Smokey posts.

Ah I see. A lot of new cars are being manufactured with sporty body styling, some are subtle, some are over the top, I guess it's user preference.

But got to admit VTEC is something.

Mini's are nice cars, however the whine from the supercharger almost makes them sound electric, but I wouldn't say they are girls cars, unless you bought a bright pink one.

Who cares what people think! How the hell is a cooper s a girls car! How old are the people with these important views? :P The cooper s is a great car, can be fairly expensive to run for a small car though. MPG isn't that great and can throw up the odd expense such as the power steering pumps.

The problem is that Smokey did not actually say the Cooper S is a chavvy car. What he did say that the monstrosity that mjt posted up earlier was chavvy and to be honest, I'd think that the vast majority of this forum would agree with that.

(Actually, is what mjt posted earlier STANDARD!? I've got an awful feeling that it is :()

Clio 182 could be a possibility I guess :\ Much prefer the Cooper S though.

At a guess, the 182 would be cheaper to run and you benefit from a newer car at a lower price. More in the bank for any bills which may arise.

They are effeminate looking to most people, in the same way an MX-5 is; that doesn't make them a bad car, it's merely an observation and an image some can't overcome.

It is standard

apart from the spoiler on the back, which is an option.

The Cooper S is a brilliant fun car but they have their downsides.

* Fuel economy isn't great (I'm averaging 23mpg at the moment in traffic which is a damn sight better than my previous cars but not fantastic for such a small car)
* Ride is crashy. The standard suspension is pretty stiff and the standard runflat tyres make it worse.
* Rattles and squeaks. My Mini is a low mileage (23k), late 2006 car from Mini Cherished yet it still had various squeaks and rattles. I've systematically eradicated them all now but I don't think they should've been there in the first place, it's not a Renault!
* Reliability. Despite my car being one of the lowest mileage R53s with impeccible history, it's still needed a clutch and flywheel last year, plus a thermostat and an ABS sensor (thankfully all under warranty) so if you're considering buying one that's twice the age, and twice the mileage then you might end up with the odd large bill or two.

Despite the above, I still really enjoy driving mine and have no plans to change it any time soon however if I was in your position then I'd probably be considering something else, your budget just isn't enough to find a good Cooper S I'm afraid.

The clio is the more sensible option tbh. cheaper which leaves me cash in the bank to insure etc. Just need to find a nice one now?

A Clio 182 would fit your budget better i think and its arguably faster/better to drive.

Personally i despise the look of them so it wouldnt be for me, but each to his own.

but it doesnt make that supercharger whine :(

Yes under 6k is the arse end of the market, but i'd risk it myself and try and find the best one i could for the money and with a warranty from a mini dealer.

Depends how much you want it i guess. Yes its a risk, but then why do you have to play it safe ?

I guess i took a risk with the running costs of the VXR because i had to sell it after 18 months. I throughly enjoyed those 18 months though apart from those last few when the clutch went and the plugs went.

Well MRLOL let's be honest. If the car costs me £5,500 I'm going to have practically hardly anything left to insure it and then maintain it. Just doesn't seem a viable option atm.

You're easily swayed?

Shop second hand dealers, they'll let you test drive their cars. If you're not confident enough to do so yourself, get someone to tag along.
