280X is the same as the 7970 right????

I have one of these running 2 x mini DP > DP cables and 1 x DVI cable, no adaptors at all and Eyefinity works fine.

Hell I have even had 1 x mini DP, 1 x HDMI and 1 x DVI running Eyefinity with no issues (may have had accident with DP cable and overstretch while crawling behind computer desk.

You won't need an adaptor to get it running provided your monitors have the right connections.

The 280X/7970 can run 2 monitors on any connection it has - DVI, HDMI, Displayport, Displayport with passive adapter, etc

To run a third or fourth monitor, the Displayport must be used either as a native connection (i.e. to a Displayport input on the monitor), or via an Active adapter. Active adapters come in several different types:

- Active Displayport to VGA (e.g. Startech DP2VGA)
- Active MiniDisplayport to VGA (e.g. Startech MDP2VGA)
- Active Displayport to DVI single link (e.g. Startech DP2DVIS)
- Active MiniDisplayport to DVI single link (e.g. Startech MDP2DVIS)
- Active Displayport to DVI dual link (e.g. Startech DP2DVID2)
- Active MiniDisplayport to DVI dual link ( http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=GX-000-SR )

The DVI single link adapters can be used for a screen up to 1920x1200, above that you will need the dual link adapters - the dual link ones are more expensive and tend to need USB power, single link ones don't need powering.

When I was running 4 screens off my 7970, none had Displayport on them, so I had:
GPU DVI to DVI on screen
GPU HDMI to HDMI on screen
GPU mDP to mDP-DVI active adapter to DVI on screen
GPU mDP to mDP-DVI active adapter to DVI on screen
and it worked perfectly. :)

Depending how many monitors you want to connect (up to 4 is fine, above 4 and we start needing MFT hubs), and what connections your monitors have will determine what cables/adapters you're going to need. Let us know what you're trying to connect and we'll come up with a plan.

Note that the single link active adaptors (good for up to 1920x1200 monitors) typically cost £20-25, not the £70 mentioned above. If you have three 1440p/1600p monitors, they do get pricey though.
