Mini-Displayport issue.

Hi I recently purchased the "GIGABYTE P35W v2-CF1 UltraForce Gamer 15.6" Full HD IPS Display, Intel Core i7-4710HQ, 8GB DDR3L, 128GB SSD & 1TB 7200TPM HDD, NVIDIA GTX870M 6144MB GDDR5 - Windows 8.1".

I have one problem and that's trying to set up multiple displays. The setup I want is a monitor and a tv connected to the laptop. Now I have this with a vga to my tv and a hdmi cable to my monitor, but I want to upgrade the connection to HD between my TV and Laptop.

Now the spec for this laptop on Overclockers does not mention a mini-displayport, but my laptop does have one. So I have got a mini-displayport to female HDMI adaptor, but when I use it nothing happens.

Am I missing something?

DisplayPort isn't compatible with HDMI...

http://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/DisplayPort unless the port is *designed* to also send out HDMI/DVi.

So there's no way to use the mini-displayport I have to set-up a connection to my TV?

It's just weird, because before this I tried a usb to hdmi adaptor and that didn't work either.

Is my laptop set up only to send signal via vga or hdmi? If so is there anyway to get around this?

SOLVED:

I called up Overclockers help line, and it appears that with certain mini-displayports you need an active adapter, as opposed to a passive way. I don't know how to tell the difference, but most will tell you in the title if you search for them.

The active adapter does the conversion from DisplayPort to HDMI.
