Can someone please recommend a good/cheap
mini itx MB to use with the Pentium-K G3258.

I want the option of being able to overclock the
cpu for gaming so I guess its a z87 or z97 MB?

I am not intersted in spending a lot on a fancy
looking MB just one that will get the job done.

Any suggestions..

Not sure if the Asus H81 is capable of overclocking.

Seen a Newegg customer reviews for ASRock H97m-itx being able to overclock a G3258 with ASRock's A-Tuning Software, but changes not being saved in BIOS (but may have changed with later BIOS revisions).

Basically Intel want you to buy Z series motherboards.

You can overclock the g3258 on H81. I've seen a few web reviews saying it can be done. The last review I looked at got to 4.7ghz on an asus h81 mobo.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but also unless you buy a "current generation" board e.g. Z97/H97, then you need a bios update for G3258 anyway - problematic if you don't already have another pre-refresh Haswell chip.

I recently bought a Corsair 250D, Asus H81I-Plus and Celeron G1820 - the plan was to run this for a couple of months, upgrade the BIOS, then upgrade to a Pentium G3258.

I have since upgraded the BIOS to 2001 so all should be well for overclocking purposes (from online reviews, forums), and when I sell the G1820 I should only lose about £10 on it so that's fine.

Now I come to think of it... it's about time I pulled my finger out and ordered the Pentium!

(for the record, I have been pleasantly surprised by how capable a G1820 and 250X can be for older 1080p gaming)

BIOS version 2105 (August) is latest for the Asus.

I'll be listing my H81i-plus soon on members market, as I've switched to an ASRock H97 today for the integrated Wi-Fi.

Was relieved CPU cooler still fitted in case as CPU socket location is a lot closer to edge.

So to check, BIOS 2015 is okay - as in, you have overclocked a G3258 with it? If so, will upgrade mine.

I was using a non-K i5. None the wiser on overclocking ability for Pentium's with newer BIOS.

Edit: To clarify I wasn't doing any overclocking.

Installed the pentium in the Asus H81 without updating the
Bios, all went well. Have installed windows and updated the Bios
with no issues so far. Haven't tried overclocking yet.
Am thinking of getting a 750Ti graphics card for the system.
I am primarily going to be using it as a media pc but want to
use it for occasional gaming too. Does anyone know if there is
much difference in the noise level between the different 750Ti
cards?.
