My GF's '02 Mini Cooper is playing up in an odd way. When stationary and idling it will randomly act like its stalled, but not actually stop the engine. The radio and everything goes off, and then immediately comes back on along with all the dash lights coming on like when you first start up. For all but 1 time its done it the engine has remained running. Occasionally the power steering will stop working for a few minutes after it does it too.

Its random when it does it. Sometimes it goes days without doing it, but just now I was sat idling and it did it consistently about once a minute for 10 minutes. Also some mornings its randomly wiped the computer, suggesting its done it over night when not in use too.

Its all a bit odd. I don't know where to start looking. Has anyone had something like this happen? First instinct is to change the battery, but its less than a year old.

I think there is a some kind of body control module that is very suceptible to water on the early models.

Battery is completely flat now, so either the battery isn't holding charge, or its not being charged. Going to pick up a battery charger from Halfords tomorrow and see if the battery is taking a charge and holding it. If its not, then its a simple battery swap. If the battery is fine however I fear we may be getting the check book out...

Why dont you just ask them to check the battery health? If it comes up ok measure the voltage over the battery terminals when the car is running and make sure its being fed a charge - if not then check for belt slip etc then check the alternator output / check the control module.mentioned in the other post.

Eliminate the simple stuff first

Battery charged and back on and it starts fine, but my OBD2 adapter shows no stored fault codes in the ECU. Do you need special BMW readers to read all BMW fault codes?

I've no other tools (like volt meters and the like) so is there anything else I can check before getting the local BMW garage to take a look?
