Mini PCI Wireless Card

I have just bought a second hand IBM Thinkpad T23 which currently has an onboard LAN and modem mini PCI card.

I have been looking around and I have seen wireless mini PCI cards, if I were to install one of these would I have issues due to the lack on anntenna?

Is a mini PCI card the same theory as a standard PCI card, eg if I plug in a wireless adaptor do I just need to load the drivers for Windows to speak to it?

Also does anyone know how different manufacturers MIMO wireless devices play together? I have a D-Link MIMO router but they don't to mini PCI cards with the technology.

Thanks for you help.

i would suggest that without the antenna wires your not going to get very good range. however, i'm fairly sure you can get hold of the wires for much cheapness and they shouldn't be too hard to fit - dependant on the construction of your laptop, obviously. i've got a dell d600 and that is amazingly simple to dismantle.

i would generally advise that it is best to keep to wireless kit from the same vendor, however, that said i've got an intel 2915abg (ok, so it's not mimo) which plays nice with my crappy freebie 2wire router at home, the netgear range of routers which we use on soho environments at work and also our corporate alcatel wlan setup too.

hope this helps! :)

Yes it'll need drivers to function.

That model has 2 pcmia slots, can you not get a wireless pcmia card?much easier than taking the lappy to pieces :)

This is what I had planned but then I thought it would be nice to have everything built in with nothing to get snapped off :)

I'll have to have a look at the antenna issue and see how easy it would be to get around.

Thanks for all the info guys :)

Some big brands (HP, compaq) require mini pci cards to be from an approved list with bios's that object if their not. You need to research that model and maybe use an addon adapter.
