Posted the problem i have had on the mini forum with the panoramic sunroof.
Basically short story is.... after the winter only now is the first chance my gf has had to open the sunroof. She tried and it was juddery, no problems ill look at it later. She tried opening it again and now its stuck in the tilt position, the sunroof is higher on the left hand compared to the right hand side. It looks like some sort of mechanical mechanism problem.

Basically the car is 4 months out of its warrenty!!! and according to other posts on the forum mini want £1600, yes £1600 to fix this type of problem. Though one or two have had this reduced to £200 (due to car being 5-6 months out of warrenty).

My question to you guys is how do i go about getting the same deal for my GF. Any law jargon i can throw at the mini dealer etc etc? being 4 months out of warrenty and being faced with a £1600 bill to fix a common bad designed problem is sickening.
So i need to prepare myself with some words before i pop down there monday.

Whats your opinions guys?

Just firmly ask them to fix it, if they say no, go to a different dealer.

You are out of warranty remember so it is good will you want.

You are entitled to absolutely nothing from them - especially if you didnt buy the car new. So don't go down there 'armed' with anything, as resolution here will rely on goodwill from BMW UK not you in warrior mode.

Ask nicely, but firmly. Don't rant, or go quoting paragraphs of text at them! If it's out of warranty, you're basically counting on their goodwill to help you out with the bill.

No i know im not entitled to anything as im out of warrenty. Just hope BMW will show me good customer service and fix this "common" problem on the car....

To be honest if you were concerned about this sort of problem you should have renewed the warranty.

Indeed, surely renewing the warranty on a Mini wouldn't cost much unless it's done mega miles?

God knows how much it would have cost, knowing BMW as i do now it would have cost a bomb.

Would you have renewed the warrenty on a 3 year old mini with 9000 miles and drives and looks like new....

Wish i did now, now that i know BMW quality isnt as good as *people* make out

I know it's a completely different company, but I'd hope the theory is the same...

There's a fairly common problem on the 9-3 with snapping front coil springs, often taking out front tyres. A lot of owners, especially with newer cars go to Saab and ask them to make a "special request" for the repair - this normally seems to work, even getting new tyres paid for. Obviously they take a lot of factors into account - service history, mileage etc but it apparently works where simply asking the dealer would fail

£1600 to repair a sunroof, Flippin hell! Hasn't anyone on the forum found somebody who can do it cheaper. If the problem is quite common then I am surprised they haven't recalled them.

Sounds like BMW prices but not service or quality.

No idea if it's the same and if you get no joy from BMW but on an old car of mine my sunroof (normal sunroof though not panaramic) did the same. I opened up the bit near the sun visor and behind that were 2 runners with strip with teeth, I used a screwdriver to pull/push on the correct runner to level the sunroof and re-assembled it all and had no problems with it after that.

It doesnt cost as much as fixing faults with modern BMW's. You should have had a letter through the post telling you exactly how much had cost, had you informed BMW UK that you were the new owner, as stated in the owners documentation. Did you not read the letter?

Of course I would, the mileage is irrelevent to things like the sunroof motor. Did you do absolutely no research prior to purchase at all?

BMW's are not supercheap cars to run, even the ones with Mini badges on. If you can mitigate costs with a reasonably priced warranty you are well advised to do so.

Its an option i would seriously consider depending on whether they can somehow get the sunroof closed to make the car drivable. Would cover the car for the rest of the year too.
