MiniDP no signal

Specs: R9 290 15.9.1 beta drivers, Asus MG279Q monitor, Win10 x64

I've been using the above monitor for just over two months with no problem, naturally using miniDP because I want Freesync. However, on booting up my PC today, the resolution on the monitor was something like 800x600, Catalyst popped up a message saying something about a displayport link failure, my second monitor using DVI was fine. Figured the easiest way to sort a failure was to unplug and replug the monitor, but since doing that, I simply get a 'no signal' when trying to use miniDP. I've now resorted to using a HDMI cable and while the monitor is now working, I dropped a lot of money on it for Freesync, so I'm after a fix! I've tried everything I can think of, unplugging both monitors, rebooting, completely powering everything off, but I can't get a signal over miniDP at all now. Nothing was shown in the device manager either.

Welcome to suggestions on how to get it working again! Worst case option is to buy a full displayport cable, which I would assume will fix the problem since it's the miniDP not working, but that's not really fixing the problem that there's something wrong somewhere.
Thanks in advance!

Edit: Tried reinstalling the 15.9.1 drivers, and noticed that I wasn't even getting a miniDP signal during post/BIOS, so I assume it's a hardware issue with either the graphics card or the monitor? Unfortunately this is the only DP monitor I have so I don't have another one to test it with. I don't suppose there's an easy way to figure out which one the problem lies with?

Ok, small update. After a couple of days running it via HDMI I tried swapping back to the miniDP cable and it's all been working fine. But today I booted up, and got the following warning popup:

The system has detected a link failure and cannot set the requested resolution and refresh rate on your DisplayPort display. Your display might not support the requested resolution or there may be an issue with the cable connecting the display to your computer. For more information, click on Help.

With the help button leading to a local .html file in the AMD install directory, so I assume it's Catalyst throwing up the error, however in the CCC if I go into the monitor details it's all appearing to be working correctly, Freesync is enabled and running so everything seems to be fine.

Should I just cross my fingers and hope everything is ok, or is this a cause to panic and start looking for a solution before something breaks more perminantly?
