Minimum for 4k monitor?

I wonder what you guys think would be the minimum card to drive a 4k monitor @ 3840 x 2160? In terms of acceptable frame rates for modern gaming.

I had a look at the current crop of cards and it looks like we are still on the same old chips squeezed with higher clocks and more memory since I got my 670 (kelper?). There must be something new due eventually that'll deliver more than the usual 5-10% bump.

What's up with the price of the 780TI; why are they so expensive, its not even a dual GPU card?

Realistically you need to look at R9 290X CF as a minimum and ideally 3-way or 4-way (although the scaling isn't brilliant at 4-way).

GTX780Ti lacks the VRAM to drive 4K at max settings, but SLI Titan might be in with a shot, but again as a minimum spec, so you'd want 3 cards again here.

780Ti is so expensive because it's a) nVidia & b) the fastest single GPU card you can buy today.

A single card won't do 4K acceptably. You need a pair of high-end cards, ones with as much VRam as possible; Crossfired 290X/290 or SLI Titans. Even then you may need to turn the detail down to get 60fps in some games.

Think you found a GTX 780 & 780ti gives a fair bit more then a 5% to 10% bump over a 670...;)

The 780 gives about a 50% bump over your 670

If I was looking for 4K right now, I'd wait a year.

Yep, Current gen cards may be '4K ready' but realistically only 3 Titan's is going to give you the best from it.

Couple of 20nm 5GB+ cards should be capable of doing 4K justice, or even wait it out for 4K GSync screens, then you won't have to be so fussy about keeping mega high frame rates as 40fps will feel great :)

2x 290's PRO/X edition or 2x Titans will be good for 60fps at medium to very high settings at acceptable fps. AMD's 290 cards do very well at 4k because of the 512bit bus. :)

512bit bus or not, 4gb is not enough for 4K unless you want to turn the settings down which defeats the point of 4K.

How much VRAM did AMD say we needed for BF4 @1080, they have warned us lol.

That's like saying don't upgrade to 1600P unless you run max settings, i don't buy it at all. 4gb will be plenty for 4k and by the time its not you'll likely need more grunt. I'm sure if you turn every setting up to 11 you can exceed 4gb in one or two titles but you'd likely need 3/4 gpu's to do that and have the grunt required to push the fps. The OP will be fine with 2x290 or higher at 4k imo. Various reviews around the web back up my 2cents as well. I would swap my 1440P Ultra settings for 4k Very high settings in a heart beat so i don't buy into your matra that if you have 4k you absolutely need the highest settings +8x MSAA.

If you don't want the max detail available with 4K you can stay with a 1600p monitor instead, they are about the same size - 30" v 31.5"

If you buy a 4K monitor use it to the max, it is not there just for epeen.

I don't recommend 2gb cards anymore for normal resolutions, you should follow suit and not recommend 4gb cards for 4K which is 4 times the resolution.

Even AMD are saying you need 3gb for BF4 at normal resolutions which kind of makes their 4gb cards obsolete for 4K.

Same size screens, but with a much high PPI. You'll need to use less AA, lowering the requirements for grunt and VRAM.

It's only 30% more demanding than eyefinity, something people have been running fine with 2xcards for ages.
