minimum installed components to start mobo?

I'm trying to trace a mobo prolem with no fans or anything working at all. Can anyone advise on the minimum hardware required to start the mobo to get to the bios beeps only?
Thanks

Needs a processor and power supply. Without ram it should beep at you.

This means working out which of the cpu and mb has died is a nightmare. Best option is to assume it's the board, as probability is on your side then. It's certainly very difficult to convince either Intel or retailers that you've got a faulty processor.

does the motherboard have a build in speaker, or have you made sure u've plugged on in.

obviously if theres no speaker, u wont get any beeps.

of course another possibility is the psu, are you sure thats working correctly ?

its possible to test it without the mobo, but plugging in a fan and shorting the power connector to turn it on. Theres a video on youtube that shows u how to

do u get any lights on the mobo at all ?
a lot of them has various status lights that are always on when theres power, regardless of if its turned on or not.

also, maybe a silly question, but did u make sure u switch the psu on as well ?

Basically its an Asus P5Q-E with 400w supply. I know I should have at least 450w but surely with nothing but cpu installed I should get a start up. Both mobo reset and power button light up but thats it. Board was working fine with last owner who was running 850w psu.

I have tried components in a lowly G31 chipset board and everything works fine. I can still RMA the board.

it does sound like the mobo might be a fault.

400W would be plenty to actually power it, especially without a high powered GPU

one more thing u could try, is to remount it in the case, making sure you dont have any extra stand offs that dont match with holes, and your not missing too many of them, otherwise it could be shorting out the board.

Update
Got new power supply and installed and it struck straight up. I then saw the 8 pin wasn't plugged in and re-plugged, restarted and nothing!!
It will start without the 4 or 8 pin plug in but won't start with them in???
