Im looking to go sli with 2 8800 ultras on my new system that I'm building. Initially I'm buying one and will buy another when the prices drop, but from reading a guide on gamespot, it says that I'll need a minimum 900w psu to run these 2, anyone know if this is correct?

well. you probably know corsair are quite happy to tell everyone they can run a sli gtx/quadcore rig on a 620w psu. certainly you dont need anywehre near as much as psu calculators or even manufacturers wwould have you believe. 750-800w from a decent psu is going to be just dandy. ive not yet seen anything realistic that needs a kw of power that doesnt include everything and the kitchen sink in one pc lol

edit: shockingly bad spelling lol

Do you honestly need to go in the direction of SLI?

Unless you game on a 30inch screen, SLI just isnt worth it. Not enough games take advantage of a SLI configuration to justify the cost of buying tow cards.

And why Ultras, they only gain a few FPS more than a GTX.

Jokesters rig with 1 ultra has been measures at over 800w.

i know. and im sure thats not right. my pc draws 350w. his draws over double mine and the only difference is a quad core (vs my e6600) and an 8800ultra (i have an 8800gtx and a 7300gt). i just cant see how a faster clocked 8800 and 2 extra cpu cores will pull an aditional 450w

I have that Enermax 720watt above and I run AM2 X2 6000 / 2 Raptor X raid0 / 1x 8800Ultra superclocked (stock is 655/1125x2) so I have no idea how he uses 800watt unless other parts like multi HDD's or WC, my PSU would not be up to my spec nevermind the advertised spec I posted above.

It does seem high but considering Nvidia recommend a 725w PSU for SLI GTX's, one can start to believe the hype.

no way. like i said, my pc draws 350w measures with profession equipment. its not possible!

why do u need an 8800 GTX and 7300GT in the same pc?

I would not got by Nvidias specs, thye had mad high spec for 6800Ultra at paper launch back in April 2004, then later revised it saying that it was to give overhead for OC'ing and they dropped it down a good chunk (cant remember what my 6800Ultra box stated on side as sold it 2weeks ago.

I do not see Enermax or Corsair claiming they can run all that on XXXwatts if it would fry the PSU and could take all other hardware with it, they would be in serious trouble if they did.

I really cant see a need for these 1000 or 1200 watt PSU's unless its for running many many HDD's aswell as SLI/Crossfire and Quads.

Link please?

I think your find that its people here on the forums that are claiming that. :)

I posted specs above for my PSU, also was reviews of it running far more devices and not failing, same with some other well known brand.

Now obv you can debate whats is 3 GPU's, like 3x 7300GT's or 3x 8800Ultras :)

I can only praise this PSU, and my 3 rails do not move 1 bit while on idle or load using a calibated digi multimeter, all are + values.

Isnt going Crossfire with 2 2900xt's faster? also cheaper, and i think you dont need the game to be CF enabled like SLI or something along those lines.

I THINK (not 100%) Nvidia can beat crossfire with 1 card in some benches (around the web and threads here), and the ATI cards use lot of power and put out lots of heat so more so in Crossfire.

A 600 Watt SLI rated PSU will quite happily handle 2x 8800 Ultras if the rest of your system is something like:

1x Core 2 Duo
2 Sticks of RAM
1x HDD
1x Optical
3-4x Fans
1x Soundcard or onboard sound

If your running quad core and lots of HDDs then you would need 720-750watt...
