I was in the process of setting up my old pc (amd 64 + a 939 board) for a mining pc. I planned to have it all watercooled as I already had a cpu and chipset block + all the other wc stuff. The board doesnt work so I cant do that anymore.

I'm now considering few options:

  • Buy a cheap as chips celeron (1155) + a reasonable board with 2 x pci e x16 in so when GPU mining is pointless I can stick a decent cpu in the board and make a reasonable gaming pc
  • Wait for something cheap to crop up on the members market.

Either way I wont need any ram as I can get that from work no problem. The pc at the moment will be living in my room, so I was keen to WC for reduced noise + no danger of GPU fans dying. What are peoples thoughts?

I am already mining with the below pc + a 5830 but the 2nd machine was going to likely be 2x 5870's or maybe a 6990 + 5870.

Sounds like a plan, you want to minimise your power footprint and maximise your output. Watercooling actually increases your memory footprint and doesn't stop the room from getting any hotter, unless you use an external radiator and put it outside or something. (dammit thats my plan!) :)

I managed to pick up the pro version of my current motherboard off the MM, sticking a celeron in it in a few days along with 2x 5870's and if the PSU will cope a 5830. Watercooling was mainly for the noise more than anything else as its hard to sleep with GPU fans going at 70%+ :P

Stuck a 5870 in my main machine along side my 6970's (glad they are watercooled, 3x air cooled cards in an 800d would get HOT!
