Minor upgrade - Issues

Hi all,

Recently got a minor upgrade a 3770k from a 2500k, £50 from one of my mates. After watching the Digital Foundry video about the both those processors I thought I would treat my self to some new RAM as well. I waiting until I got the RAM to start looking at overclocking again.

Ive ran into 2 issues.
1. My computer won't boot correctly if I have the RAM over 1600mhz - I get a warning message that a recent Overclock or voltage change has caused it to use default settings. I've tried the XMP and manually setting it higher.
2. I can't seem to raise the multiplier higher than x39 on the CPU

RAM - Corsair Vengeance CMY8GX3M2A2133C11 2 x 4GB
Mobo - Gigabyte GA-Z68X-UD3P-B3

I reset the Bios to fail safe defaults but wasn't sure if I had to reset the CMOS? Or have I bought incompatible RAM? Should I look to get a better mobo? Appreciate any help

Cheers

CPU is definitely the K version. Says so in the Bios and CPU-Z. Not to sound stupid but what do you mean by multi-changing?

BIOS is upto date bar a beta version that updates it to UEFI but I'm not sure how to upgrade to that and didn't want to mess about with it. The two two prior versions both say that it added support for Ivybridge.

Thanks for the quick responses.

It could be as simple as the memory controller in the CPU not being good enough to run at the RAMs rated speed.

Unlike todays modern platforms where we have been use to atleast 2400Mhz+ for awhile, those CPUs werent as easy to run with quick ram.

If you can find what setting in the BIOS controllers the IMC voltage (system agent maybe I think it was?) you can try adding a bit of extra voltage to see if it will run at the correct speed.

Indeed also try a single RAM stick on its own at XMP.

Thanks Stulid. I'll look to try that and see how I get on.

Would be disappointed if it won't work as I've read loads of people online with RAM at that speed as well as the Digital Foundry video!

Ah ok! Looked into it a bit more and I think I might need a Z77 motherboard.

Tried increase the voltages as mentioned above and no luck.

Cheers both!

I remember that when I had a Giga Z68 board, all it did was stop the CPU from Turbo'ing correctly.

If you then did the UEFI flash (using a DOS prompt and some command line to flash as you couldnt use Qflash etc to do this) it then fixed the issue on the Ivybridge CPUs, but then you had a lack of adjustments (specifically vcore) in this new UEFI BIOS to overclock.

Whilst that's rubbish news Andarial it does clear things up! Great find cheers!

I'll perhaps try that Stulid, it's just the instructions weren't clear on Gigbytes website and the utility it downloads doesn't appear to work on Windows 10.

Got my eye out for a z77 mobo and placed a thread in the wanted section.

I did make a thread along time ago on how to do it

https://forums.overclockers.co.uk/showthread.php?t=18404556&highlight=Uefi+startername_Stulid

But it's so long ago the images are gone.

If I remember correctly there was also a site/page from someone also showing how to do it and even how to flash back to the original style BIOS if you ain't happy.

I will see if I can find it.

EDIT,

To UEFI - http://www.tonymacx86.com/general-h...ios-uefi-gigabytes-6-series-motherboards.html

Stulid, that's honestly great. Thanks for looking all that out :)

I'll give it a whirl later on and see how I get on. But, yeah, thanks a lot.

So....

Updated to UEFI. It's unlocked the multiplier, I've put it to 42 and it accepts the XMP on the RAM so it's running at 2133MHZ :) ran Prime for an hour and it seems stable, hitting max of 76c but was for the vast majority below that. I realise I'll need to run it for longer to truly test it.

Fallout 4 managed to hit 60 fps without dropping below. I found in sanctuary and a few other places it would dip below on occasions. Tested my Steam Link as well, computer wakes and run great as well.

Again, thanks to both of you but Stulid, you most certainly have my thanks. Massive massive help. Top man. :)
