's machine... Got ya!

Right I've an ageing Intel core Duo E8500 sat next to me, which is going to form the core of an upgrade for my Wife's even older AMD machine.

She mainly uses it for word documents and email etc but does occasionally like to play Half Life 2 and some other games, doesn't care about the Graphics, just wants it to work (still plays Summoner which really shows you she doesn't care about GFX's.)

It's got 4 GB of Corsair Dominator ram (4x1 GB 8-8-8-24) and a GTX 295.

However to give it a bit of lasting appeal I am going to blank the existing 500 GB drive and throw in a SSD with windows 7.

However at this point I am wondering is there an affordable system upgrade we could attempt at the same time. Total budget is £300 so I turn to you as I have looked and whilst the budget would cover a Value Intel I5 upgrade (bundle of Mobo / Ram/ Chip) I can't see it would be a massive improvement and thus it would be better to bank the money for a long term more costly upgrade.

What do you think?

YOUR BASKET
1 x Microsoft Windows 7 Home Premium SP1 64-Bit - OEM (GFC-02050) £83.99
1 x OCZ Agility 3 120GB 2.5" SATA 6Gb/s Solid State Hard Drive (AGT3-25SAT3-120G) £79.99
Total : £173.58 (includes shipping : £8.00).

Use the developers copy of windows 8 for now bud. It comes out in october so it's silly to buy windows 7 now in my eyes.

YOUR BASKET
1 x Samsung 128GB SSD 830 Desktop Series SATA 6Gb/s KIT with Norton Ghost - (MZ-7PC128D/EU) £83.99
1 x Intel 330 Series 120GB 2.5" SATA 6Gb/s Solid State Hard Drive - Retail £83.99
Total : £177.58 (includes shipping : £8.00).

Couple of SSD alternatives there, personally I'd favour the samsung. What's your mobo like? Can you overclock the E8500? Maybe a heatsink would make sense as it can be reused on other sockets.

Thanks m8, well I am thinking about windows 7 because it's established and it has to work, can't be fighting the OS at all, and as stated she prefers older apps.

Mobo is an 790I if I remember rightly. Could probably overclock slightly but didn't think there were H/sinks for that chip any more
