I've been away from Linux for a year or so after trying to get used to Unity and Gnome 3. I went back to Windows 7 but with the release of Windows 8 decided that I would give Unity another go and checked distrowatch to see which distros are top of the charts at the moment. Noticed Linux Mint was back up top so checked out the website as I was curious to see how they were doing with their mash up version.
Last time I saw Mint they had a hybrid messy solution for getting around the Unity/Gnome problem and now they have Cinnamon. After using it for a while I think it's great! I loved some of the Gnome 3 and new Ubuntu features, but the desktop management put me off with the large icons and full screen apps, etc (same reason I dislike Windows 8). I tried XFCE but found bugs with it. So far Cinnamon brings back the desktop interface I know and love, along with the nicer graphics of Gnome 3 and it doesn't look hacked together. Runs well too so far.
Will be testing for a few days, but am impressed so far. Anyone else tried it? Seems this linux forum is pretty quiet these days.
