Mint 8 - Helena

why use this over ubuntu 9.10?

Why use Ubuntu over Debian / Why use Debian over Red Hat / Why use Red Hat over Gentoo / etc?

Personal preference....

However - I believe that when you install Mint, it automagically does the extra five or so clicks to install the restricted codecs for you (or something like that).

EDIT: @ OP... why a clean install? Debian variants are usually more than happy to do in-place upgrades.

Not from what i've heard about upgrading from Ubuntu 9.04 to Ubuntu 9.10, which is essentially what this is. There have been a lot of problems...

Meh, i'm already half way through downloading the .iso, which is a lot for my little Internet connection. Besides, i'd like a fresh start - i didn't buy these 100 CD-Rs for no reason ;)

I've not read about the problems going from 9.04 (which I believe is the stable release) to 9.10 (testing) as I generally don't use ubuntu, but I did have some issues taking my girlfriends laptop from kubunut 8.04 to 9.04... and although it did involve a bit of work to get it working properly, it was less work than re-installing the whole OS and all the programs and system config that goes with that (yes, I suppose I could have taken a backup of the relevant files from /etc and re-installed - but still fixing the issues is surely less of a hassle?)

I don't mind... there's nothing quite like that fresh OS feeling you get. Besides, i've only been using 7 for about a month, so i haven't amassed that many programs and i barely have any saved work.

As a Linux newbie (I've dabbled with a few distros, but basically know nothing)

I have to say, this release is outstanding, everything 'just works' and the package manager is superb.

One slight problem that I have, maybe one of you can help? I currently only have the left channel working (speakers and headphone slot) on my laptop. Works fine in XP/7

Dell Inspiron 6400

I don't know what sound mixer gnome uses, so crack open alsamixer from a console and see if you have a muted channel.

Whatever, i've got it working now and it's a fair improvement over 7. No seriously major changes, but every little thing is just that much better, which makes it a lot nicer to work with.

Aparently Mint is now the fourth most widely used home OS, behind Windows, OSX and Ubuntu. I found that hard to believe but whatever:

AKiRa121: We’re now the 4th most widely used OS at home. We’ve passed the stage where we want to put our brand on everything we do and constantly remind people of who we are. Our tools are of good quality but so far they haven’t integrated well within the Gnome desktop, they’ve looked like an odd supplement to it. They’re complimenting the desktop though, so they should integrate with it the same way other Gnome, Debian, Ubuntu, 3rd party applications do. In the end it doesn’t matter who does what and who’s using it, the nature of Open Source is re-usability, so let’s make our desktop the best we can and not worry about losing some credit or some exclusivity.
