Mint Bottom Panel/Bar Changes

sorry back in windows now but it looks pretty similar to :

Oh, that! OK, that's what in KDE would be called the Kicker. Can't remember the Gnome designation but it isn't a panel; a panel is what you have running along the bottom of the screen.

Anyway, yes, there's definitely a way to change that. What you need to do first of all is remove that thing altogether (or keep it there for now for peace of mind), and add a different menu to the panel. Right-click the panel - what in Windows would be called the taskbar I guess - and you should have an option to "add to panel" or something along those lines. Then you need to look for menus. As a starting point, a more conventional Gnome 2.x desktop would have three menus - applications, places and system. See if you can add those and see what you think of them.

As to the more cosmetic options, you'd probably have to mess with the system theme.
