mint linux on usb pen

Hi

I've made a live cd on to a usb pen, its fully working as I can boot off the drive and use linux, but the settings are not being saved after I shutdown or boot. Is there anything I can do to set it up so that it saves the settings or do I have to install linux on to the pen drive to make it work that way.
