Hey folks, just after a bit of advice.

I turned one of my monitors, an Acer LCD, on this morning and it made a rather strange noise... similar to the sound of someone exhaling their breath quickly but quietly and this lasted for maybe 5-6 seconds.

The monitor then worked fine for about 15 mins and then turned itself off. It will turn back on for around 3 seconds but then it turns itself off again, when it briefly dispalys an image the image is much darker than usual as I don't think the backlight is working.

Basically it is broken but I was wondering if anyone had any ideas as to what was actually causing this and if it was anything I could potentially fix with my trusty soldering iron.

Thanks!

how old is it? has it been on the blink for a while or just in the very recent past? sounds like a problem on the power board, possibly a leaking capacitor. that would perhaps explain why it turned on for a moment then failed and now it will only turn on for a few seconds at a time.

do caps make a sound when they go?

have you tried the usualy suspects? cables, source etc.

Aye all the usual suspects have been checked out. I have heard a capacitor go but it popped when it went, the noise I heard was an almost strange whisper like noise. Will open it up and see if there is anything obvious anyway I think :).
