Just wondering what in general causes misfires as currently have a slightly annoying one.

It only happens between 1k -2k prm as far as can tell

Any ideas what to look at first?

I am no mechanic but a misfire is a cylinder not firing properly so, spark plugs and its electrics so coil pack / distributer but of course you dont give enough info...

What sort of car diesel or petrol first : )

What car is it?

Plugs, Leads, Individual coils or coil pack depends what it has.

Jaaaag gets misfires.

Fortunately only when it rains. Turns at lower windscreen rubber not flush against windscreen due to scuttle panel deformation, no doubt from some monkey trying to fit pollen filter by just bending panel out the way instead of removing.

So water can also cause misfires if it's running onto the engine, so one to check too. ;)

Easy way to test for this is pour water down windscreen and see if any makes it way under Bonnet onto engine or electrics. Also make sure your washer jets are sealed too.

If you have a seat ibiza cupra 1.4 tsi, you get misfires for free.

You should try VR6 ownership. I think my car was misfiring for most of my ownership between a broken coilpack, dodgy leads, shagged plugs, oil getting thrown at the new plugs (cylinder liners commonly wear on 1 and 6).

Just to add to the above annoyances, the leads required a special bloody tool to remove.

Good point only last week I had to diagnose an intermittent misfire, turns out there was a collection of water in spark plug well!

Try buying silicon spray, I used d90 stuff in my last car due to a lovely design of allowing excess water to run across the distributor....
I found it even solved the issue of spar leads loosing there insulation properties
