Missing 2gb of ram

Hi all,

I recently purchased a Titan Onyx system from overclockers.
(http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=FS-025-OP)

(RAM: Corsair XMS3 6GB (3x2GB) DDR3 PC3-12800C9 (1600MHz) Tri-Channel)

When I look at the system properties it says I only have 4gb of ram installed?

After googling a bit, the answers I found were very confusing for someone with _very_ basic PC knowledge

Any help would be very much appreciated.

Edit- I just saw on CPU-Z there is a memory option. This displays 6gb so I assume it is just a bug on the system properties page?

32 bit or 64 bit os?

goto task manager , it will tell you free memory , over 4k Mb means your getting the lot. Are you using x64 windows ? its a redundant question i expect but windows shows 4gb when you have 3.333 odd gb in 32 bit mode.

Sorry, should have mentioned that. It's 64 bit Windows 7.

This might be a scary answer to your problem, but it is possible that either one of the RAM sticks is faulty/ broken or at least one of your RAM slots is instead.

This is what I see on Task Manager

So there it says total memory is 4087. So according to that I'm missing 2gb right?

ram is either broken/faulty or not fully in the SLOT ! LOL, Open up the side of your case and check that there are 3 sticks, .... YA wont have to touch anything and its a fool proof way to know. If there are 3 then we can go from there, if there isnt , then say hello to mr.OcUk support

After saying all that i cant see what i said above being true, there should be a memory drop down on the spd page check that there are 3 sticks to chose from. Im starting to believe our fellow poster thinking your ram slot is prob fu-bared, ram being fu-barred means it is actually in use and causing havoc, your pc aint even recognising it, i dont think any version of Win7 x64 caps ram so low as 4Gb , 24Gb or something is a cap, but surely not 4...

Are you positve its not x32, as in double checked in the System status in control panel.

There is definitely 3 sticks in there and they feel like they are put in properly.

This is what I see on System Properties, so it's Windows 7 Home Premium. Is that capped at 4gb? :S

Also I read something about checking that in msconfig that maximum memory is unchecked, I have done this as well.

Post a message to an OCUK rep, there is something wrong, ask them for advice before rma'ing it. perhaps they will say swap the ram chips around, install one, then 2 then 3 and watch for differences in Task Man, but dont do anything hardware related till you ring em tomorrow at 9 am

As others have said, try switching around the RAM sticks and make sure they are seated right, this happened to me when I first booted my system and that sorted it.

Might also be a bent pin in the cpu socket - 1366 sockets are very fragile and it's fairly easy to misalign the cpu slightly during installation. If you do a search you'll find a lot of people with exactly your problem due to this.

As it is a OcUK build definitely get their advice on what you should/shouldn't try so as you don't invalidate any warranty.

I had the same problem but with different RAM. I used memtest but found no error. I then bought a new set of RAM sticks as an upgrade and the problem seems to have gone. A solution that temporarily worked for me was to loosen the cpu cooler a bit.

Memory hole remapping should not matter on an X58 chipset and should be left at the default setting. You have 1 of 4 problems.

First, go to your RUN window and open a command prompt. Then type MSCONFIG, go to the BOOT tab, Advanced properties. Make sure that your maximum memory is not limited here. If it is not limited then you have 1 of the following.

1. A bad motherboard, most likely a bad memory slot or trace between the slot and CPU socket, or bent pins in the CPU socket.
2. A bad memory module.
3. A bad CPU, most likely the memory controller.

Try this, clear the CMOS, reboot and enable the XMP profile and also temporarily disable Legacy USB Support. Then, test each memory module for 3-5 passes each with Memtest from www.memtest.org

Post your results.

i had similar problem on my old setup turned out i had bent few cpu skt pins.

Don't listen to the silly fools telling you to poke around and do x,y and z. Chances are they right but as you brought a pre built system then its overclockers responsibility to fix it. If you do go messing around and break something then they could be entitled to say its your own fault. Their warranty and quality is what you're paying extra for anyways!
