Ha this is not ur normal oo u need to run 64 bit... please read on

I am running windowz XP 64x bit with the lastest patches, drivers and BIOS.

When i boot with 1 stick of 2 gig RAM, windows reports 1.96 gigs of RAM (this is fine as the LAN, audio and display all knick a bit. BIOS says 2 gig

When i boot with 2 sticks of 2 gig (4gb) windows reports 2.92 gigs of RAM (strange i've lost a gig !!!) BIOS says 4 gig

When i boot with 4 sticks of 2 gig (8gb) windows reports 6.92 gigs of RAM (strange i've still lost a gig !!!) BIOS says 8 gig

The board is a Intel Desktop DQ45CB
The processor is E7400 (also tried a E8400 with all the tests above)
OS is windozs XP 64 bit SP2 with all the latest drivers, patches and BIOS

Please help this happens on all 10 Mobos and i need to run VM's on this so i need the extra gig !!!

yer, sorry i should have said, i bought 10 mobos 20 sticks of RAM and 10 cpus... i've tryed nearly all the sticks and the same happens....

Max ram on the board is 8 gig.

Just found this....
¹ System resources and hardware (such as PCI and PCI Express*) require physical memory address locations that can reduce available addressable system memory. This could result in a reduction of as much as 1GB or more of physical addressable memory being available to the operating system and applications, depending on the system configuration and operating system.

But i'l still missing more than a gig !!
i understand the 1.96 as 400 is being used for misc devices, but why am i missing a gig plus 800 mb !!!

eugh

This should not apply to a 64 bit OS as your addressable limit is WAY above 4GB.

If it continues with the latest BIOS and after a CMOS clear, I'd contact Intel.

Also, it should not matter but can you test with another 64bit OS other than XP?

If possable as already suggested get another 64bit OS to try, Any 64 bit linux distro would do seeing as their free or if you must use an MS operating system you dont need a product key just to try Vista for 30 days, You could also get a key from MS for windows 7 and Dl the public beta from some where

I found on some motherboards you have to enable something in the bios to get more than the 32bit memory cap. cant remember what it is though sorry

Is there a memory-remapping option in the BIOS?

Just a note when you are running 8GB of RAM (If that will be your normal configuration on one of the systems) with the particular motherboard that you have:

Microsoft said:
For Windows Vista to use all 4 GB of memory on a computer that has 4 GB of memory installed, the computer must meet the following requirements:

The chipset must support at least 8 GB of address space.....

When the physical RAM that is installed on a computer equals the address space that is supported by the chipset, the total system memory that is available to the operating system is always less than the physical RAM that is installed. For example, consider a computer that has an Intel 975X chipset that supports 8 GB of address space. If you install 8 GB of RAM, the system memory that is available to the operating system will be reduced by the PCI configuration requirements. In this scenario, PCI configuration requirements reduce the memory that is available to the operating system by an amount that is between approximately 200 MB and approximately 1 GB. The reduction depends on the configuration.

I think Fire Wizard has it - it's an addressing limit on the mobo. Certainly a mobo that supports up to 16GB of RAM such as my GA-EP45-UD3P shows all 8GB installed in XP64.

I think the Misc Devices thing is the problem since this has on board graphics & they usually use System RAM could it be possible it is the on board graphics that is using the missing RAM?....

The following is taken from the boards manual:

1.6.1.2 Dynamic Video Memory Technology (DVMT 5.0)
DVMT enables enhanced graphics and memory performance through highly efficient
memory utilization. DVMT ensures the most efficient use of available system memory
for maximum 2-D/3-D graphics performance. The amount of system memory
allocated to DVMT varies depending on the amount of total system memory installed
as well as the operating system being used. For Windows Vista, a minimum of 128 MB
can be allocated to DVMT and a maximum of over 2 GB can be allocated to DVMT with
the correct amount of memory installed. DVMT returns system memory back to the
operating system when the additional system memory is no longer required by the
graphics subsystem.
DVMT will always use a minimal fixed portion of system physical memory (as set in the
BIOS Setup program) for compatibility with legacy applications. An example of this
would be when using VGA graphics under DOS. Once loaded, the operating system
and graphics drivers allocate additional system memory to the graphics buffer as
needed for performing graphics functions.

Woth Checking the settings in the BIOS?

Thanks guys, there is no option for remapping memory, i'm gonna download linux 64 bit now and see what happens

I've checked the Video and it's set to use only 256mb, it's really weird...

Is there a memory-remapping option in the BIOS?

U've lost me here, as i put in 4 gig and it happens as well as 8 gig... how would i loose the same amount of memory if it was an address issue ?!?!?

I have 64 vista, with 4gb of RAM. I remember about 6 months ago, after a windows update suddenly I only had 3gb of RAM (despite having 4gb recognised beforehand). Due to other issues I reinstalled vista, and now it works fine. No idea why, but might work?

I've now tried Ubuntu 64 bit and it show 3.8 GB (so the video has stolen 256mb)

Must be a windozs thing, gonna try vista 64 and windoz 7 tomorrow...

I was just explaining to say that when you had 8GB of RAM installed, it won't see the full amount due to the addressable limit of the motherboard.

Regarding why you lose a certain amount of memory when you have 4GB installed, that's a completely different issue and I was hoping the memory-remapping option would solve this. Though, as you said, there is no memory-remapping option in the BIOS.

Have you tried emailing Intel about this yet?
