Missing Core in Task MAnager

Hi this is probably a common problem but I did a search and couldn't find anything.
I noticed yesterday that despite having a dual core processor - AMDx2 3800, I now only have one graph on the Performance tab. I updated the BIOS, checked ACPI is running, the dual core processor is showing in Device Manager etc but I can't seem to get the second graph back.
Has anyone got a cure for this please?

Make sure computer type in device manager is Acpi Multiprocessor PC. If it isnt you need to update the HAL. There are threads on this forum with tools to make that task easier.

Presume you have downloaded the latest AMD drivers for the cpu and the dual core optimiser malarky?

Yes I have, and the latest bios. This is really puzzling me. Would a clean install of XP solve this?

spec:
Athlon 64 x2 3800+
MSI MS-7252 board
2.00gb RAM
450w power supply (not sure about all the technical stuff)
BFG 8800GT 512mb

Update:
Just completed a fresh install of Vista Ultimate and there is still only 1 graph showing. Also, the CPU seems to run at 100% whenever I run an intense application like Winavi it reaches the 100% and crashes.

It is greyed out.
Also, with the new installation it now says ACPIx86-based pc. The miulticore reference seems to have disappeared.
I basically updated the bios and now I seem to have lost one of my cores that I cannot retrieve whatever I do.

Your DEFINITELY missing a driver (or have a faulty CPU). Have a check through and find the list of what to install in what order. Theres a few windows updates that need popping on too from memory (maybe not for vista though).

I once had this problem, the only way to resolve it was to do a format and then install windows.

I tried other available solutions like updating the driver and could never get it to work right.

100% sure its an X2 3800+? Theres single core versions as well. Whats the clock speed?

I've seen both cores from first start on a 3800+ X2 with a plain vanilla XP install disc with no service packs dating back to 2002 :D

In his picture he posted it says X2 so ye he has one. I think maybe you have a faulty cpu. You could try another bios but that reinstall should have fixed it already..

Just an update.
Firstly It has shown two graphs in task manager for nearly 2 years so I am positive it's a dual core.
I have done a completely fresh install of, firstly Vista - no joy, then XP Pro. It was still recognised as a single core. I have cleared the CMOS - still one core, installed the latest BIOS, installed the processor hotfix/driver etc. Basically tried every suggestion I have been offered on the net.
I'm starting to resign myself to the fact that there may be something wrong with the processor. :(

Have you checked BOOT.INI in msconfig?

I once set up a dual core Xeon system that refused to run both cores, even though the same boot image had been used on lots of systems without any problem.

In the RUN box type msconfig
Select the BOOT.INI tab.
Select the Advanced Options.
On my system the /NUMPROC field was set to one, remove this and the system then sees both cores, or manually fix it at 2 if that helps.
You will have to reboot.
