My mate was having a problem with his laptop not booting into windows. After some further investigation I have identified that it’s missing an important file.

I know that with the windows XP disc you can perform some sort of repair procedure that replaces the missing file. I’ve done it before but I cannot remember the exact commands.

Would someone mind helping me out here?

Thanks.

recovery console is what you want

easiet to get his laptop to your place / another machine, any xp disc will be able to fix it

fixboot
fixmbr

they usually work, or it might be ntldr (the ms site is v good for info on this)

That won't work is it's a system file that's missing, only if you have a problem with the bootloader.
