Hey guys, how's your network knowlage?
I need some help with this new computer i got from OcUK, it doesnt seem to have an IP address. I'm using a Belkin usb wireless device which works fine on my laptop.
My modem, network and card are working as intended (since i'm using it to post this :D ) and I have tried connecting directly to the modem and router with same results. All drivers are properly installed and working, the only problem is the network connections icon constantly trying to aquire connection.

Running Dos cmd. 'ipconfig' shows,
"IP Address....:0.0.0.0"
"Subnet Mask...:0.0.0.0"
Also in support tab within network status shows "Address type: Invalid Address" but has a physical address at least.
I have tried tinkering with Internet Protocal and Obtaining IP automaticly is a no go. I have also tried using a working static IP which almost connected...even thinks it is connected but isnt
(my setup is Cable modem - router - laptop/Mac OS is WinXP)

Little off topic Q: This is the 2nd fault I seem to have got with this new comp, not to mention the 10min startup. Do OcUK do refunds? the last repair they did took 4weeks and now with this new problem, i'm under pressure to get it done. Trying to stop my dad going to the trading standards office :S. (sorry about the mini rant but It had to be done :p )

Yes, all i had to do when i started up the computer was activate windows via telephone and bob being my uncle, got me in no problem.
I have posted this thread on another board, talked to everyone i know who might know about networking and they all give me different "ideas" but arn't sure themselves :)

Yes. Having "Optain an IP address automaticly" doesnt get an IP. As far as i know DHCP is enabled since my parents Mac picked it up right away (perhaps already having an IP ;) ). How can i configure the router? to me it is just the white box that relys info to the modem.

I understand Oc doesnt support networking probs, but with my little knowlage of networking, i presumed it broken thus asking them about it. This is now looking more of a misconfiguration which not many people know about, which is why I opened this thread instead of poking tech support :p

Its a Netgear 108 MBPS WIRELESS FIREWALL ROUTER.
The setup CD that came with it fixed up my laptop but part of the setup requires direct connection to the modem when i do, it cant find the modem with this Zeroed IP so i cant complete the setup for the Pc.
an ip can come from the router but the router wants a ip to work with?

Hmm this is troubling, prompting for password..i dont think i have it. I think i'll have to reinstall the router on my laptop to get a new user name and password tomorrow.

Right. Got into the router..hazzah! :D
okay..having alook about i see "Get Dynamically From ISP" is on under IP address and DNS is the same.
There is an option to register to something about dynamic DNS which seems interesting.
I'll have a nose, which area should i look into?

Edit: I see many ways to tell my router to connect to my desktop PC, its just a shame i dont have an IP to give it.

Poking abou Computer Management - services, I see 'DHCP Client' is on Automatic but the status is stuck on 'Starting' which I suppose relates to the acquiring network add. I see 'Routing & Remote Access' seems to be the only thing relevant (I think) is Disabled.
Many people seem to say, "get your router to give you one" Is this the only way to get a working IP? cant i just get an address from somewhere and just add it manually? I know how to do that anyway
(oh er sorry for forum bumpage..just updating :o )

I have put an IP in, the gateway is set..also got the router to give my desktops address a static route and it says it is active! but! although the Pc got past the normal acquiring part..it came up with "failed to complete the following: Registering with DNS"
I have set DNS as the same address with the router (set alt dns with a 1.4 instead of the 1.1 would that make a difference?) since that is how the laptop is set, is that right?

I feel close to getting on :)

'Register this connection' in DNS is ticked.
This is strange; Network connections says Connected but a network utility i have says the computer isnt getting to the router. Also the DHCP page still says 'starting' when it says it's meant to be connect.

LOL... I just spotted where you are. Hello neighbour. I know a decent IT Engineer who operates in your area who could take the headache away... :p
lol please do, Nothing i love better then coming home from work to spend 6 hours going back and forth from laptop to desktop trying to get connected :( I am close to looking in the Yellow pages/friday add for a mech.

Sorry for the confusion, but i have other threads across the net on this..you guys have made best progres but I do loose track of what i told who. @_@
As from what i've done,
  • Optaining IP and DNS automaticly doesnt work.
  • Given it an IP and DNS to use isnt working (last nights attempt still in the works)
  • Router cant pick up signal from the Pc but computer says it has.
  • DHCP Client is on Automatic but the status is stuck on Starting.
  • Router has been reinstalled, all drivers are up to date and working perfect for the other machines in my network.
I'm not sure where to problem is at the moment; Is it the router refusing my new Pc? or is the new Pc scrambled and unable to send to the router? (Brother did suggest reseting Pc to factory settings incase Oc did something silly ;) )

The computers setup maybe wrong, I didnt set up anything when i got this computer. Dont know if windows it is up to date or not. The windows firewall is down and it wont let me put it up anyway which is driving my Macfee nuts. As soon as i activated windows, i installed my important stuff like music, pictures and files then firewall. Then i tried internet and i came to this problem, thinking it was all tested and ready to go why shouldnt i have alittle whine? :D

Okay, an email should get to ya soon MAllen, cheers.

If there is a proper system malfuntion somewhere, i'll let you guys know for future reference..if it is actually a 30min config job, i think i'll let the thread fade away ;)
Thanks for all your help.
