Missing memory

So I have 6GB of memory or at least I did until today when I dismantled my PC to put in a new CPU cooler I put everything back together but now my bios and windows says I only have 4GB. If I load up CPUZ that thinks I have 6GB.

The problem seems to relate to one ram slot. If I put another stick in the slot it is still not detected but taking the stick of ram from the slot that isn't working and putting it elsewhere that stick is detected.

Im running an intel i7 920 in a Gigabyte GA-EX58-UD5P motherboard with 3 x 2GB sticks of Corsair XMS3. The memory is installed in the 3 white slots and the one that doesnt seem to be working is the slot nearest the CPU. I tried switching the memory to the blue slots but the PC wouldn't even boot I don't know if this is because they can only be used once the white slots are full?

Can anyone please offer any insight is my MB screwed or could it be a config issue?

Do as Alex says...Very common problem.

Also, Do a search for MemTest 4.10, download, burn to a CD, an Boot. Great memory checker. This found one of my memory sticks to be at fault.

Are u overclocking to high as I noticed when I overclocked to high with my corsair I would loose one dimm in the end changed them out for ocz blades

+1 for reseating the cooler as the first thing to try - don't over-tighten it as this has been known to cause this problem.

Did you, by any chance, reseat the cpu when you were changing coolers? If yes, then there's a possibility you might have bent a pin in the socket, which is another common cause of memory failing to show up in the BIOS.

Highly unlikely to be a failed stick/ram slot if it was working ok previously.
