Hey guys,

Sadly, over the weekend a good friend of mine passed away. Their funeral is being held on Thursday 16th and I have an exam on Friday 17th. I contacted my uni and they said I will need to provide documents for extenuating circumstances but didn't tell me what, waiting on the reply about that.

Does anyone have any idea what they will need? I can't exactly walk over to my friends grieving parents and ask them if they have a photocopier and the death certificate handy can I...

Thanks

Sorry for your loss but man the hell up.

Funeral is on the 16th, exam is on the 17th. What's the problem?
Sounds like you're looking for an excuse to delay your sitting of the exam.

I had a similar situation while I was at university, my grandmother past away and the funeral was on the same day as a exam. I got a copy of a letter from the funeral director and submitted that as evidence.
I sat the exam during the resits in the summer, but it classed as my first attempt due to extenuating circumstances.

Yeah, your need to provide a death certificate. I also don't think you can present a photocopy either...

Maybe a funeral invite, or something from the venue where the funeral is being held| That's all I can think of!

I have never received an 'invite' to a funeral and unfortunately I've been to a fair few recently...

Find out who is arranging the funeral from the families side of things and ask them for a copy of the death certificate if that is what they require.

I somehow feel the circumstances wouldn't change if it would to involve you instead.

Sorry for your loss bud.

Also good luck on your exam :)

From my own experience, Uni's are rubbish when it comes to this. Whilst I was taking my finals, my best mate from secondary school died of cancer. I told my tutor about the fact that I wanted to go to his funeral. The problem was that it was going to be on the day that one of my exams was on, so they said I would get a 0 in my exam if I missed it for the funeral and would not take my course work as 100% for that module.

Fair enough, I went to the exam and had to visit his grave after I finished my exams to pay my final respect to him. Gutted I was.

Even more gutted when my house mate at the time (a lass) managed to get out of doing to majority of her final exams because she was too 'stressed'.

Kent Uni! They love their students! Tossers.

I had a similar situation during one phase of my finals, an exam clashed with my grandmothers funneral, and as the course i was doing was an intercalated year within my main course, i was advised to miss the funeral and do the exam, as a repeat in the summer would mean I wouldn't be automatically be reaccepted into my primary degree.

So it was do the exam or risk missing a year. Sucked at the time, but was aparently necessary.

With regards the funeral being on a different day to the exam, unless there is a large distance of travel involved, and unless they are an immediate family member, I don't see why the university would accept any excuse.

It is a long distance?

If it wasn't for the lame students who try to get out of uni deadlines and exams by using death as an excuse, you would have been trusted. My university has exactly the same policy.

Sorry for your loss :(
