I got a w7 home premium licensed version on my netbook, but dont have the install disc, even if i had it, it would be no use, because I want to upgrade from 32bit to 64bit.

The netbook has 4gb ram, and is currently only using 3.3gb of it, which is such a waste.

are there any legit sources where i can download the iso, ideally oficially from microsoft, because i dont trust these 3rd party torrent sites.

First of al naturally one needs a netbook with a chip that acccepts 64 bit. Then one needs an oem windows 7 copy applicable to ones netbook vendor (HP/Dell etc) as the copy needs a slic 2.1 applicable thereto. What make of netbook is it?

it's a asus 1201n, it has a dual core chip atom 330. I have a license sticker at the back Windows 7 home premium OA.

Is the asus windows DVD an absolute must? what would happen if i installed a generic version?

I want to install Win7 home premium OEM onto my Dell laptop too, its got Ubuntu on at the moment. Had Win7 preinstalled when i bought it.

I've got the product key on the laptop, but no installation media. Can you just download the Win7 eval and licence it using the OEM key i have ?

Should be fine :)

OP: Have a look on the MyDigitalLife forums for an ISO of Windows 7 media. You should be fine using generic media and your serial key ALTHOUGH you may have to activate via phone :).

Hmm apparently this is easier said than done. You can't seem to download the Eval for Home Premium. Gah, I own the key, i just don't have the media. Where can i download an .iso from ?

Someone on here might be able to help if they have a Technet or MSDN subscription.

Yes you can download the ISO from an official source. Contact via trust if you want me to point you in the right direction :) (half afraid to post it on here despite it being an official MS source :p)

thanks, downloading it, will do a crc check to confirm it's untouched.

I installed the 64bit windows 7 home premium, but my problem is still the same. the computer only recognises 3.3Gb of the ram.

I thought a 64bit os fixes all that, feel like I wasted my time, luckily i took a snapshot with acronis, so I can reverse the changes back.

Is memory mapping enabled in the BIOS?

Normally Dell systems have a D Restore partition on then, to access it press F8 when you see the dell splash screen. You can also get a disc from dell support UK.:D

Sounds like the onboard graphics card is using the reserved ram.

thanks a lot mate, I think that's the issue here, I took out a 2GB ram stick, and it only recognised 1.75gb of it.

I decided to stick with 64bit win7, (mainly because my acronis restore failed.. so annoying). There seems to be a very slight performance improvement, my firefox used to freeze sometimes, now it doesn't, though im not sure if it's down to the upgrade onto firefox 4 or what.
