I'm trying to get networking and ICS to work on a friends computer and the ICS service doesn't seem to be installed. When I try to add the peer-to-peer networking services in add/remove windows components it says it can't find a file it needs even though it is right there where it's looking. I've tried completely reinstalling SP2 and that didn't work. I'm starting to think it's a complete write-off.

wtf.....

no need for that matey. just right click the connection you want to share (ie the adapter connected to the internet), select properties and goto the advanced tab and hit the share the connection tick box. :)

Put in your Windows XP CD, click on START > RUN and type: "sfc /scannow"

This will check all windows files and replace any that are damaged or missing.

When I do that it complains that the connection sharing service is missing. I think the name of the service is sharedaccess. I think that service needs to have peer-to-peer networking installed.

I can try the windows disc thing but since it's a retail PC it might just have a recovery disc or something so it might not work. Also when I try to access the windows firewall in control panel it says an unexpected error occurred and it can't open it.

start, run, services.msc

scroll down to the bottom and look for the "Windows Firewall/Internet Connection Sharing (ICS)" service. if it exists then check it's started and the startup type is auto.

if it's not there then the windows install is knacked (imho). you really do not need to use peer to peer in add/remove programs for this.... :p

Well it isn't there. I assumed it was part of the peer-to-peer networking windows components. I really don't understand how they managed to delete the ICS service but they have. I even tried reinstalling SP2 but that didn't put it back in the list.
