I'm fancying a speaker upgrade - Currently running a Marantz amp (forget the model) hooked up to some bookshelf Mission 701's - very nice sound, but I'm fancying something a tad beefier.

Just found a set of Mission 753's for sale - they look absolutely stunning, true audio porn indeed!! :D

Anyone got these, or heard a set of them? My excuse is they match the fireplace woodwork :p

Very nice speaker, we have a pair here, cost £800 back in the mid 90's, usually go for 250-400 dependant on condition.

Very good bass for the size, though there are much bassier floorstanders out there if that's your thing. Very hard to drive - you need a decent amp to run them properly, though they will run on just about anything, just not very well at high volumes.

Come in two flavours - 753 and 753 freedom - freedoms being a revised version with a different tweeter. The freedom was supposed to be better but it's actually pretty subjective so if you get a good deal on either I'd go for them.

Rosewood tend to be more expensive, but depending on how much you care about condition you could probably get a marked pair of black ones for £250-300 - a real bargain for the sound quality you get. A significant upgrade from these new would probably cost you £1500+.

The 753 freedoms have slightly deeper bass, as they reduced the internal chamber which contains the top woofers and tweeter (which means the bass chamber with the bottom two woofers got bigger without making the overall cabinet size bigger). Also the silk dome tweeter does mean the freedoms sound quite a bit smoother on amps with bright or open high frequencies.

The 753's sound nice, but the freedom is definalty nicer, at least to my ears. They are pretty hard to drive well, especially if you want to keep the bass under control.

I use a pair of Audiolab 8000 monoblocks to drive mine, and they are an excellent match.

I rather like the light oak finish, but settled for black ash, as it was a little cheaper. Had them since new, and they have been completely trouble free.

Nice - using an 8000A and 8000P combo on mine, sounded very good at low volumes with just one 8000A though. Definately difficult to drive :)

Thanks for the replies - I know I haven't got enough quality in my amp to justify these, but I know my current Missions sound great, so I might look into an amp upgrade a bit later if I end up getting these.

These are rosewood, so they'd even match the furniture nicely!
