I have just bought a pair of second hand M72's. I was wondering if anyone had any recommendations for amplifiers to use with them?

I haven't really got much experience with Hi-Fi as these will hopefully be an upgrade to my current Aego M's.

Thanks.

Oops forgot to mention that, well I managed to get the speakers for £68 delivered so ideally I'd probably look for a second hand amp that is similarly priced. Up to £100 I'd say, unless its not possible to get one that cheap, I'm not really familiar with the pricing of amplifiers.

How about an Audiolab 8000A, which can usually be found between £120 and £150. That's what I used with them :) NAD sounds like a good idea too.

Very good bookshelf speaker, lots of low frequency extension and a good sound stage, you'll enjoy them :)

Thanks for the replies. I did read that they were quite bassy which suits me, but I wonder how they will compare to the dedicated sub of the Aego's.

I think my speakers have slightly more bass extension. However, compared to my fairly massive sub they are not as powerfully bassy, but it is much more apparent since it is the actual note, rather than a boom coming from somewhere else.

They have plenty of bass, even for hip hop and dance etc for me.

Much better, if you have the amp to deal with it :)

I bi-amp'ed the M72 with an 8000a and 8000p for fun, they are very very capable speakers :D

edit - they go down to 56hz at -3dB, your sub may go slightly lower but it will be a generic thud sound - you'll be impressed once you get your new setup sorted.

Ugh, just looking at a few online hi-fi retailers - there's so many different amps I don't really know what I'm looking for! I do know I'd like it in black with a headphone socket but they probably aren't the most important features.

How many watts per channel would I need, considering the speakers say 25-100W is fine?

Anyone had experience with a Cambridge Audio A5? Or a NAD C315?

Ahhh, bit the bullet and went for the NAD C315 BEE for 160 quid brand new. It has what I need and from what I've read its a reasonably good amp for the money. Since its the first time I've owned anything bigger than PC speakers I'm sure this combined with the M72's will impress me.

Thanks for the help guys.

So which one of you is ashbyflyer?:)

The speakers sound brilliant, definitely a lot better than the Aego's and I really liked them!

There is no lack of bass thats for sure, but would I be right in thinking I could hook up the Aego subwoofer to the subwoofer output on my Xonar DX and still have the speakers working from the front output? I'm not at home to test this but it would be nice to somehow make it a 2.1 system even if it's not really necessary.

I am :) Glad you're pleased!

Not sure which Aego you have but if you link it I could probably let you know how to go 2.1. Don't think it would really help unless you wanted a bit of low quality exaggerated bass at a party... might be cool for films though :)

It's these:

Yeah you are right, it would be ideal for parties and movies or when I'm listening to some DnB, otherwise I'd just leave it off.

My Xonar DX has the following connections: Analog Output Jack: 3.50mm mini jack *4 (Front/Side/Center-Subwoofer/Back).

I thought I could have the NAD amp and M72's connected to the front output and the sub (which is active) connected to the subwoofer output. Not sure how the card will handle sharing the load but I think its configurable in the xonar software.

Thanks again.

Pretty sure you could, if it didn't work with it on the sub output you could feed it the tape loop from your NAD and just not plug the satellites in

Ah, did not know you could do that. Will try both and see what happens.

I assume that using the tape loop bypasses the amplifier so it won't make my sub explode?:D

Yeah it's just a line level (non powered) output. The sub & sats will behave just as if you've plugged them into the PC.
