Hello

so long story short I purchased 4 sticks of supposedly matching ddr4 from a well known auction site...... [which i seem to have awful luck with so this might be my last time using them]
3 of the sticks are what was listed, 2666,hz c16 8gb per stick
however it seems the 4th stick is 3000mhz also the 3 sticks are 1.20v the 4th non mathced one is 1.36v

this is a present for a friend im trying to get the bits together to upgrade his pc and so far ive bought the 3 items to upgrade
weve had the wrong motherboard sent the wrong cpu and now the ram not as advertised so i think this project is cursed lol.
not even the same seller but thats irrelevant and not for this forum.
not sure what to do though....
do i just try and run it as a missmatched set? do i try and find a 4th matched one for him?
either way im going to end up out of pocket i guess.
will running this missmatch make his upgrade into a non upgrade will it run slower than my brain on a good day?

if it matters the matched 3 have 16-18-18-35
and the 4th non matched has 16-20-20-38

how bad is this going to be???
my luck has been terrible so far on this project, lol
im guessing trying to find a matching single stick is going to be a nightmare too
made worse by this being the absolute worst timing to buy ddr4 lol
reason I am asking here instead of trying it first is its going to take me a good month or 2 before we have all of the parts
made even worse by the other wrong parts weve been sent. by the time i get to try it and find out I will be way beyond being
able to return or do anything with it,
if it will work fine and be like a single digit % difference i guess wed have to grudgingly live with it
but if its going to be significantly slower, well im worried i might end up having spent a load of money on something that is actually
a downgrade from what he already has lol and thats not much of a present
"hi mate have a downgrade i just spent a fortune on" lol yeah

sorry for weird way of typing i have autism and im really struggling to try formatting my posts and replies to make them easier
for people on the forum to decipher but I think im actually making it worse lol

What kind of PC is this going into? Motherboard? CPU?

Old Intel PCs will likely default to 2133-2666 anyway, in which case this should be a non-issue.

Semd them back and buy something like Corsair for the warranty.

Case in point, I had a stick of almost four year old Corsair memory fail on me a few weeks ago.

Corsair replaced all four sticks with brand new sticks, minimal fuss, and the new sticks will have the same warranty.

the motherboard is a gigabyte z390 gaming x [which was meant to be the aorus master lol yeah a different seller sent me a wrong motherboard as well]
and almost hilariously the cpu was meant to be a 9900k and we got sent a 7500 i think it was il replace that with either a 9700k or a 9900k when i can actually afford to get one

these are corsair but the budget isnt there to buy this new its a present for a friend i cant afford to buy him new parts lol i am currently saving up to get myself some new ram this is just a me attempting to help someone out and ending up with a expensive headache mission lol

This isn't really relevant to your question, but you're aware these things are usually hilariously overpriced, right? A 12100F or 12400F/14400F and cheapo H610 board usually beats them on price and performance.

yeah tbh if it was my choice of hardware id just give him my am4 build when i replace it with am5 but he has an irrational hate for amd for some reason and doesnt want to "downgrade" from his i7 [which is my old 4770k oh no its my old 4790k not a massive difference]
the ram did only cost me like 50 quid or something and the mobo was only like 80 or something id guess a 12th gen is gonna cost more than that just for the cpu?
i can deffo see your point here maybe i should try get refunded on the incorrect parts and try get him a 12th gen plaform
probably worth mentioning he doesnt really game much wit h it its mostly for media consumption i think thats what he uses it for mostly
hes actually the guy i usually go to for tech related advice but I wanted to try surprise him both with a nice [ish] upgrade AND make it look
like ive actually learnt stuff and things and sound like i knew what i was doing lol
epic fail on that one i think but ehhhh at least we can get a laugh out of it

Ahh, one of those "has to be i7" types, I see :o

Well, to get i7 12th gen would be very expensive. I was mainly just thinking of a 12400F, which matches or beats a 9900K in pretty much everything. You can get them for ~£100 new.

The 12100F is also pretty powerful, despite only having 4 cores, matching a 10600 in most games, though if he doesn't want less than an i7 getting an i3 would be a stretch!

Edit: should clarify: the -F CPUs don't have integrated graphics.

yeah cpu wise il just have to get a 9700k or 9900k as and when one comes up cheap on the used market lol

and yeah he is basically and wont touch amd because of a few bad experiences back last century lol otherwise id give him my 5900x rig when i upgrade in a month or two
but here we are lol.
so the ram being non exact match should work reasonably ok then? if thats the case then well im safe i guess lol
massive thanks for the help i appreciate it, been a bit anxious over this one for no real reason lol its all good if its going to work thats all that matters
this all actually started off because i wanted an excuse to replace my 970 evo plus m.2 drive with another 990 pro my excuse was then he could have a new pc
obviously it was partially a joke i could have just bought a 990 pro i didnt need to buy someone else a pc to use my old drive i just saw an excuse with a joke
practically welded to it and im running with it lol
again massive thanks at least i know i havnt completely screwed his upgrade up i guess lol
also i made a rule im not allowed to actually upgrade mine until ive succesfully done my bit to upgrade his lol
again excuses i should just admit i like computers and be done with it

8th-9th gen CPUs are rated to 2666 and that's what they normally run at ("out of the box"), so if you're happy to run that speed it shouldn't be a problem.

The default latency (JEDEC timings) is CL19, so CL16 is a high speed kit.

I'm not sure if the board will just go with CL16, or choose the more conservative CL19.

It might be that you need to enable XMP to attempt running all the sticks at CL19.

These PCs are forgiving about mixed sticks, but there's always a possibility they don't play nice together.

You can overclock memory beyond 2666 with Z390, by the way, but I guess that doesn't matter if you have 3x 2666 sticks.

yeah he doesnt want to overclock anything either
all good worst case il have to find a single matching stick i guess the other stick i can deffo find a use for tbh
massive thanks again at least i dont have to worry about it so much at least lol
now i can get back to epic failure and my own upgrade to am5 which means im going to be spending a lot of time on here passively reading lol
