Missus need a diesel ~£1k to spend

As title really, she has a new job which involves quite a bit of milage and its costing her a fortune in petrol on her rover 214si. Looking to spend around the £1k mark but all depends on what we would get for her Rover, its an S-reg with all the trimings and only 40k on the clock.

ZX TD or 306 TD if she wants a decent diesel engine in (presumably) a small car for £1000. They're both dated and will have horrible rattly interiors though.

Is the MPG on the Rover really that bad?

You aren't going to see a significant improvement on mileage the Rover, unless it happens to be really knackered. The 1.4K series should be able to return 40+mpg with ease.

1K limits you to some fairly old machinery in diesel terms. The venerable XUD is a good engine, but better in the smaller cars such as the 306. Avoid old Ford diesels IMO. Some swear by them, I swear at them.
