Mister FPGA

In one or two years there will be something else and no doubt i'll have had 10 devices in the next 2 years :D

Is the DE10-NANO better than the Cyclone V in the Analogue Pocket?

If the Analogue can do video out, why not just get that and a docking station (if there is one) or add a hub too it for more USB ports?
Saves going down the route of MiSTer all together and you get something handheld (but guess its lacking a few cores like N64 and PSX) but don't see why it would be if the Cyclone V can (if it can) already run N64 & PSX.
The DE10-NANO is better than the Pocket Open FPGA. You can get a dock for the Pocket. It is great for stuff up to SNES/MD although does have a really good Marvel vs Capcom core. I think 2D PS1 games might be ok, there was work on a 2D core.

The Pocket supports wireless and USB controllers, but isn't as versatile as MiSTer.

I think MiSTer is here to stay for quite a while. There was talk about a follow up called 'MARS' that ended up going no where, it was supposed to include NAOMI and Dreamcast cores with some other bells and whistles. I think the biggest problem is affordability of FPGA boards beyond the DE10-NANO. Anything we do see will probably have better performance/room for better accuracy on existing cores. Maybe 4K output. But I doubt we will see much beyond the existing console generation that has already been released. The community keep working hard and releasing cores people never thought possible, so who knows. I think the successor board is currently DE25-NANO but it is still costly and has unknown potential.

If you did pick up a MiSTer, consider the NFC cards that Zaf uses (or makes - not sure sorry :)), maybe that would help avoid the constant scrolling for games.

No, they’ve said it will be open source from the start unlike A3D. So I’d expect devs will start porting to the AMD FPGA. This is the closest we’ll get to a MiSTer 2 in a while I reckon.
That is really cool, I'll keep an eye out and if I can get past that shell maybe jump onboard.

I don't know if they have been scalped, but they are very high in demand and Taki is still shipping them out in batches. The Pi and QMTECH clones are worth checking out as well, but that depends on how you want the MiSTer to look within your set up.
Superstation One in the blue case is £650 on the bay. I've seen others with inflated prices.

I've always had emulators on my machine (going back to early alpha days of Bleem and some official released version before Sony put a stop to it) and whilst good, they're always missing something.
I don't really know what that missing this is, but I was tempted by an A500 mini as I had an A500 as a kid - maybe its the controllers that tempted me. I've tried many different handhelds, from cheapo Anbernics to Legion Go S and Steam Decks and everything inbetween.
It's probably the tinkering around part I like more, then I get bored of the games. FPGA sparked my interest, but could see it getting expensive fast and not actually playing many games (just testing them)

I think this is 100% the main issue. I enjoy the tinkering more than the playing which is why i'm now looking at getting a Modretro Chromatic as I love Modretro Tetris on GBC emulators.
Both the Superstation one and the Multi system peaked my interest with my bonus coming around the corner. I have an Arcade1Up cab with a Pi5 using RetroPie with about 600 curated games that I would actually play and another 150 on the Batocera drive with a Lightgun.

However I spend more time tinkering and experimenting (eg just been testing PS Vita, Xbox, PS3 and Triforce emulation) than playing games at the moment and when I look at FPGA I`m not really interested in consoles they are just nice to have and Arcade games sub year 2000 are my main interest and FPGA does not seem to have enough to cover the games I would play. I've not yet worked out how you would play the 300 or so arcade games I have amongst the 600 on a £200+ FPGA machine.

You may have seen the prices, but what are they being sold for? Because a quick scan myself, none of them have sold for more than £363.70, with a lot sold for less than £300. I cannot see the £650 listing either?

Edit: Also, who is playing 600 games. Good luck with that :D

I've had my SuperStation One for a couple of weeks and I've been absolutely loving it.

There was a bit of a learning curve at the start as I've not fiddled with MiSTer before but once I got it setup it has been incredibly hassle free.

My main use case is playing NTSC games on my little CRT which was a complete faff before. If I was only playing over HDMI I'd probably stick with a Pi 5.

I've been playing through Chrono Trigger and dipping into a few arcade games. I'm excited to start exploring Amiga, C64 and strangely enough, Jaguar.

I absolutely love the simplicity of hooking the SS1 upto a CRT. The ports on it are amazing, including the Guncon45 adapter.

ive tried so many guncons and guncon adaptors and controllers and can never get them to work, i think because my two monitors are a pvm and a bnc vga monitor, i dont have a regular tv after a dropped my 20" sony which hurt my soul.

My PVM works via SVideo. Assuming you've tried different types of cables and still no luck?

The kids bought me a Mister Multisystem 2 for Fathers Day to which I have only just got around to unpacking it!

I didn't think I wanted one, as I prefer repairing old hardware and having the original but this was interesting, and the MisterFPGA project is quite impressive for its HW emulation.

As for SS1 vs Multisystem 2, it's a little difficult for me, Heber are around 15 miles away and I did interview with them back in 2015 and liked the place, so supporting local UK companies like this would always win out with everything else being relatively equal..

So I'm now in the mire of trying to curate some Roms, my retropie collection is not in the right structure and I will probably just curate those that I want to play rather than a million versions, although I will see if I can have local (SD Card) for my favs, and then use CIFs to share my entire ROM collection with it..

Get yourself some NFC cards and Zaparoo front end setup ;)
