mITX Mediaserver Parts List

CPU: Intel Celeron G1820
MoBo: Asus H81I-PLUS
RAM: 4GB Ballistix Sport 1600MHz
PSU: Corsair 430w Bronze Semi Modular
Case: Coolermaster Elite 130
Storage: 2x 2TB (bought)
Boot: Intel X25M 80GB (old/bought)

I need the machine to stream media over the house, mostly high bit rate 1080p video/blu-ray.
Machine would be on pretty much 24/7 so prioritised low power.

Would this spec be sufficient for those needs?

Which OS?

How are you planning on doing the streaming, will you be using network shares or do you need to do transcoding?

Do you really need RAM that fast and a PSU that powerful?

- OS will most likely be Windows 7.
- I will be streaming to other PC's/Laptops around the house.
- Doubt I'll do any transcoding, just sharing the file. I assume I'd need an i5 for transcoding on the fly.
- RAM wise it's either 1333MHz or 1600MHz and seeing as there is a £3-£4 difference in price, I'll just go with the faster memory. Better resale value later on if nothing else.
- PSU: That's the cheapest good quality bronze rated PSU I can find.

You might want to go with some variant of Linux or Unix and save yourself the cost of a Windows license. Something like FreeNAS or XPEnology will give you everything you could need out of a file server, you don't need to stick yourself with the overhead and expense of running a desktop.

whs 2011 can be had for quite cheap and isn't a million miles off windows 7 and can run most if not all programs for win7

I will look into that.

Is it easy to get setup with Linux? What program would you recommend?
I've not really used Linux it before so was going to go with Windows for compatibility/ease of use.

im using whs 2011 for my media server it backs up all my photos and files from all the families pcs and rips blu rays to stream to my other htpc takes a few weeks to learn the server side of things but its great once you get used to it
