Mix AMD chipset with NVIDIA gpu (and vice versa)

It just occurred to me that all my troubles seem to happen when I mix these vendors products:

nforce chipset + ati 3870 = regular bsod (10 times a day)
amd chipset + gts 250 = bsod on boot (has never worked)

but when I swapped my components around:

nforce chipset + gts 250 = works like a dream
amd chipset + ati 3870 = no problemo

OC support says "you can mix them no problem"

I don't think so

Has anybody seen a AMD 790X chipset work with an nvidia GPU ?

yep been fine.

790GX chipset with a GTX260, then a GTX470, works with my GTX295 and even have a 9800gt as a PhysX card.
