I bought an extra 2GB of RAM last year - 'Corsair 2GB Kit (2x1GB) DDR2 533MHz/PC2-4300 Memory Non-ECC Unbuffered CL4 ' to add to my exisiting 2GB which is a similar spec. Thing is, my machine will only see 3GB, and I don't think that will change when I switch from XP to Windows 7. (CPU won't do 64 bit OS?)

Can I pop the redundant 4th stick in my parents' Dell 5150? A certain memory checker says that DDR2 PC2-5300 would be an ideal upgrade for them. I assume that my slightly slower RAM will not make a negative difference, as they only have 1GB anyway, so it would be doubling the RAM.

What CPU are you running that won't support 64bit?

well if you are going to do that then you will be loosing the dual channel benefits. Also if the memory in your parents machine is compatable with yours why not use their memory in your machine and then they will have a paired set in theirs which should work better than a mismatch. Also if they have 2x512mb then you will have your memory running dual channel too.
