I have a few machines that are usually manned and passing files between them would be handy.

However, I'd rather not enable 'shared folders' on any machine.
What I was looking for was a drag and drop lan transfer app, that works on all platforms. Giver is in a pretty shabby state but would be ideal. :/

So I tried using Pidgin and the zeroconf/bonjour protocol. sadly this does not work either. Probably works between same OS clients but Linux to Mac does not.

Is anyone aware of an application or a solution to this problem?

Good old FTP? Would require servers & clients setting up, but would give you a 'drag and drop' type interface. Other option would be a Waste network setup (http://waste.sourceforge.net) nice and secure. SFTP would be best if you have linux file servers, WinSCP is a good windows client.

Samba/shared folders would be your best choice though IMO, once you've got it all set up correctly its no hassle. Can I ask why you don't want to use it?

Because I don't want samba/ftp servers running for every client I add to the network.
Not to mention the cross platform authentication issues with samba and the time spent messing around per seat.

Giver or the aforementioned Pidgin transfers would be ideal, if they worked.
