I have 2x geil value ram 2gb dual channel ddr3 in my mobo atm, but I'm tempted to buy the xms3 crucial 8gb (2x4gb) kit on this week only while they're cheap and I have the cash. Could I just bung them in next to my existing kit and adjust timings or would they run in single channel (or not at all)?

It's more the timings and voltage you'll have to worry about than the capacity.
I am running (for some time now) 3x1Gb and 3x2Gb OCZ Gold 1600MHz RAM at the moment and all is fine but they're the same make and model but just different capacity.

Generally it is ok to mix different size sticks as long as the speed and timings are the same as well as voltage. Check your motherboard manual and see what it advises.

18gb (OCZ Reaper PC1440 3x2gb + Corsair Vengeance PC12800 3x4gb) running fine in my system at 9-9-9-24 1t 1600mhz. Couldn't get the Vengeance to run at 8-8-8 though even with 1.6v on the ram :-(
