Mixing Dual Band and Tri Band devices?

I'm currently using my Vodafone router and 3 of the Asus Lyra mesh devices.

I have the WIFI on the Vodafone router disabled and use it as a modem for my Asus Lyra mesh.

I'm looking to buy either the AC68U or AC88U and use this as the modem/router connected to the phone line and then can use the Lyra nodes elsewhere around the house.

As the above 2 routers are Dual-Band and the Lyra Devices are Tri-Band. Will they integrate nicely together or will this cause problems?

I think i'm right in saying that the Lyra devices offer 2 bands to the "Wifi" and then keep the 3rd band as a way of communicating between themselves so not sure how having a dual band router would impact this.

I agree which is why i'm checking.

Annoyingly it seems Asus do 2 models of the AC88U. The RT-AC88U and the DSL-AC88U. Looks like the RT model supports AI Mesh but the DSL version (which i would need) doesnt :(

VDSL

To be honest the base Vodafone modem probably isn't *that* bad with all the wifi functionality turned off. However i'd have liked to setup a VPN at router level which i can't do at the moment and also figure i could then move one of the Lyra nodes to somewhere else in the house.

Router level VPNs aren't necessarily a good idea. Not all traffic is suited to VPNs so you really need something that isn't all or nothing.

If the Asus RT version does what you want you could use it with a Huawei HG612 VDSL modem. They're easily and cheaply available secondhand.

You could also use a HG612 with the mesh system and remove the Vodafone router completely.

I had looked at the HG612 but i'm also planning to connect a USB hard drive to the router for file sharing/backups and the Asus Mesh devices don't have a USB.

The read/write performance for drives connected to routers in that way is usually terrible.

If that's what you want put your money towards a NAS instead of a new router.

It's mainly for playing music. I did have a server running WHS2011 but it was overkill and not needed. I just want something to store music/the odd document and photo. If it takes a long time to write to i'm not really bothered.

Looks like at the moment none of the DSL based Asus Routers will integrate into the Lyra Mesh. It's in the pipeline but this could be a while of.

I had the following thoughts and wondered if you could advise which you think would be best.

1 - Buy the DSL-AC88U modem/router. Connect this to the phone line and use it as the router or wired in devices. Things like the Fire TV/Sky Boxes. Then connect that router to the Asus Lyra mesh on seperate channel to provide Wifi.

Hopefully this would keep things separate and stop interference until the modem is integrated into the Lyra Mesh.

2 - (and this may be the most sensible), buy the HG612 modem and use that to replace my existing Vodafone router. Then use the Lyra mesh as i am currently. Forget about adding another router into the mix until Asus releases the software for me to do everything i want.

3 - As per 2, but buy the non DSL version of the AC88U router and use it after the HG612. This would give me what i need now as they have firmware for it to form part of the Lyra Mesh available.

I'd go for option 2 or not change anything for now.

Avoid spending any serious money until you can buy what you actually want.

Where does it say that their routers will integrate with Lyra? AiMesh will add mesh networking between some of their routers, but I can't see anything that says the two systems will seamlessly integrate. They even have a FAQ entry titled '[AiMesh] Which one should I choose, Lyra or AiMesh?'.

Whilst i suppose it's not directly from Asus

ASUS AiMesh is a free update for selected ASUS routers, and is available worldwide. Currently supported routers are: RT-AC68P, RT-AC68U, RT-AC68UF, RT-AC68W, RT-AC68R, RT-AC68U V2, RT-AC1900, RT-AC1900P, RT-AC86U, RT-AC2900, RT-AC88U, RT-AC3100. ROG Rapture GT-AC5300, RT-AC5300, ASUS Blue Cave and ASUS Lyra Series routers will be ready later in 2018.

I think you're right, i think i'll pick up the HG612 just because they seem to hold their value and i can assess the impact of it.
