Mixing RAM sticks

I'm building a 2nd gaming PC for the gf and have a quick question.

I have 2 x 4gb and a 8gb RAM chips laying around. Should give her a total of 16GB in theory. Would there be any overall slow down over dual channel vs single channel performance? Or do I have that wrong?

If you want dual channel, you need equal amounts of chips installed in to the respective paired slots.

If the mobo supports flex mode it will run the two sticks in dual channel and the odd third stick in single channel mode, if it doesn't support flex mode then all 3 sticks will run in single channel mode.
