What great drivers cars they were, rear wheel drive and all that.i used to own a
1977 RS2000 which was based on the two door MKII Escort.
It had a 2 litre in-line four SOHC engine.
The gearbox was bolted to the rear of the engine.
Power was then fed to the diff by a prop shaft then onto the rear wheels.ahhh those were the days when you could get insured on almost anything!

nothing like powersliding on opposite lock in the wet :D unlike todays boy racers we had real cars!! :eek: not small 1 litres paying 1500 a year in insurance!

happy days indeed.

if serious cash means around four hundred quids worth of parts and a little welding then yes, you're right.
after "sorting out" the handling is sublime.

Mk1 > Mk2

You mean someone sat down in the Ford offices and signed off on a car that was totally inferior to the one it replaced? Blimey, that must have been a bit daft! Whats the story behind that? :eek:

I loved them had a mexico red and white with sports suspension and two tone blue rs2000 . Raced a mk1 on the loose with 1760 twin cam then rs2000 both race spec complete with 4 link and watts linkage and a limited slip diff.
They all handled very well nice and forgiving .

Fun machines, nice bits of kit. Not much scratch compared to the Sprint, mind :D

<runs>

Heard an ex-dealership owner telling how they used to race the two, Escort was always comprehensively run into the floor by the 'mite :D

I was stating my opinion, especially in the looks.

The_Dark_Side, For me it's the beast below gets my thumbs up. :D It has a 2.2 XE engine in there producing 282bhp and 206lb/ft. Look on the link and you can see just how far back they have got the engine, good for the balance.

They are practically the same car, except for styling and slightly thinner leafsprings. To drive, there is no difference. I like and owned them both, but prefer the mk1.

Here's my current one (which needs lowering at the front before anyone starts ;) ) :
