Mk2 Focus problems starting when cold

Hi all,

Looking for some advice with my '06 Focus (1.6l petrol, Ti-VCT engine).

The vast majority of the time it will start first time without issue, but on occasion the car will shake quite noticeably side to side as the engine catches on and make a very low pitched (kind of) rumbling noise. This lasts all of a second or two and after that all seems fine. So far I've put it down to 'one of those things', though I guess this shouldn't really ever happen?

Yesterday the car did its dodgy start routine but didn't start first time. It did second time, but again with the shaking. The previous night it had been on a 150 mile round trip without issue. For the rest of the day it ran fine and started up first time perfectly every time (3-4 short trips throughout the day).

Today, it again refused to start first time. Started up second time with no issue, I turned it off after a few seconds idling, tried starting it up again and all fine again, no issue at all.

The car isn't used daily and so sometimes it can be sat for a couple of days between uses. That doesn't seem to correlate too strongly with the problems starting though. The only thing that I have noticed is that this only happens when the car has been left at least overnight. When actually driving I haven't noticed anything wrong at all. Fluid levels all look fine, but that's about as far as my mechanical knowledge goes, I'm pretty new to all this (but keen to learn)

Any ideas/things I can try to narrow down the problem/get a bit more of an idea what could be up? The main thing I want to figure out is whether this is indicative of anything that should be sorted asap/could get rapidly worse?

Thanks :)

No idea on the battery, based on the service booklet the plugs were last changed in 2012 - there have been three services since, two by the previous owner that just mention oil + filter and brakes/tyres, and the stamp from the 'service' when I bought the car where I'm pretty convinced they would have done nothing.

I had a vaguely similar problem on a 2.0. Problems starting and a lumpy idle. In my case I needed the IMRC (Inlet Manifold Runner Control) to be replaced.
