im no machanic but i have sone oil changes in the past aand fitted front break disks. Im abit short on cash atm and was thinking about services the car myself at 139k. Service before that was 120k i belive. Do you think this is a bad idea. Will it cause me grief when i come to sell the car having done the service myself?

Yes well worth it, have serviced every car I've owned myself (well my dad).

The money I have saved is well worth the potential loss come selling it.

And lets be honest you aint going to get a great deal of money for a 130K golf, so I would vote a definate yes,

ok. I was hoping someone would say that as i didnt really fancy shelling out £100 aswel as my tax and mot. Im going to have to compile a list of bits to do. Never done much with diesel engines before. Is there anything to go for apart from the obvious?

just re read your original post, 19k miles is far to long to leave an engine between oil changes

i think you should just take it to a garage/dealer unless you know what is due/necessary to be carried out to it

i have a pretty good idea. I can always check service schedules by vdub. Oil is a must. Along with filter.

things that can be changed in a "service", off the top of my head
engine oil/filter
air filter
cabin filter
coolant
thermostat
brake fluid
pas fluid
gearbox oil
bushes
belts
tensioners
water pump
all the ingition parts (if its a petrol engined car)

there are all sorts of things that may need to be done to the car. you just need to check/find out if they are due/need to be changed or not

so youre the only person that can answer your question. i could guess for you or lie to you if you like

Not necessarily. A diesel VW on long life service intervals only needs oil every 20k(long life oil). My Octavia has had the same oil in it for 16k miles and has 135k on the clock. Runs perfectly.

his is a 1.9 tdi 110... they are very old engines, long before the disaster that is long life servicing happened

My Octavia has the same 1.9 lump. Long life servicing has been an option on VAG diesels for years.

I agree that more frequent oil changes are a very good idea, but to say take it to a garage because it has done 19k on the same oil doesn't make sense.

I agree with Matt's comment. They put long life on everythign from the base spec to my RS4 - thankfully the previous owners switched it to fixed intervals. Havign the same oil in the car for so long can't be good.

Plus it costs a bloody fortune!

Ok reading through the service history in the official service history manual on the car

@ 78905 miles it had a service with extra's including

Time or performance inspection
Additional work
Fuel filter change
Toothed belt change
Air filter changed
Break fluid changed

obviously there have been more services.

In the manual it says "Every 120,000 miles" toothed belt and toothed belt tensioner for camshaft drive renewed (only for 4 cyl petrol engines).

Do you recon im safe then with the major service changes?

Think it would be wise to change

Air filter, brake fluid possibly

if the air filter looks manky or has been in there tens of thousands of miles, change it

if the brake fluid looks make or has been in there 2-3years+, change it.

gearbox oil ever been changed?
the bushes must be code F by now, unless theyve been done before... if not, change them too

see a pattern yet?
