Hi there, I was driving on the m'way today and I heard abit bang and something fell off, my battery light came on although the car was still running and my steering became extremely heavey, I pulled over and I could see the fan belt hanging.

I got it home and called out the AA, he had a look and says as the belt came off it snapped part of the alternator which means a new alternator

Does anyone know a rough price for this? He thinks about £120 for the part plus 1h30 minutes fitting labour.

Our customer base in work is mainly motor factors so I have plenty of contacts, but would it be best to take it straight to a garage or get the part from a motor factors then take it to a garage.

Thanks all :(

An hour and a half to fit an alternator?.. He must have included an hour for lunch ;)

sounds about right to me TBH but no harm in calling a few indys for quotes.

Well im working from home today, already phoned round a few garages, got to call back in in about half hour so they can gather prices

Its either going to cost £150 with labour or £180 with labour depending on which alternator I need, I cant believe you have to take the entire thing of to get to the part number :(

The car is getting on abit now, 159k Diesel, electrics (immobaliser, alarm, electric windows) are failing electrical wise, now the alternator.

Better start planning on looking for a new car in the next 3-5 months.

Huh? Can you not do it yourself?

I did one in my old rover, took 15 mins to take out, take it to local 'factors, swopped for a refurb unit (£80) and about 25 minutes to put back in and retension. To be fair, 15 minutes of that was working out HOW to retension it :D.

Thats cheap for a new alternator, I got charged £350 for the one in my old ST24 to be changed!
Did the ST24 have a tight engine bay?

Jobs on my Fiat Coupe were always well expensive as a number of things needed to be removed before relatively simple items could be replaced.

Iv done a few bits on my car including break disk/pad changes, oil, coil spring changes but to be honest unless I had a day to go over the procedure, plus I dont know if there is any other damage caused by the belt.

The labour itself is only £32, so either way the part is going to cost around £130odd, then I may aswel pay the £32 and get it done properly

True :) washing up liquid and sugar :) plus cloths to mop up the black marks off the door frames and windows before people notice :)

£32 is nothing, all I have to do is get up at half 8 tomorrow, and work from home again :)

The alternator's on these car's have a kinda clutch / (DMF type of mechanism) built into the actual alternator pulley.

I have been told this usually screws up after time etc....

It's a pitty people don't really refurb / recondition these types of parts anymore
