A common fault on the MK4 Golf is with the coolant bottle lid seals going causing a slow but steady leak under pressure, cheap fix to rule this out.
After that my next port of call would be the radiator and pipe work. The early MK4s are heading for 10 years old so not unusual that the radiator may be rotten/damaged by stones etc.
After the radiator/pipe work I would start looking at the waterpump if its not been changed for a while they can also leak.
Can you not break an egg into it? That can permanently seal small leaks, IIRC.. I may be missing small details like take out the yolk first, I can't remember properly
It does a similar job to radweld. Bars seal is better, it's like a giant oxo cube. I had a small leak on the zx which it fixed and lasted the remaining 8 months of my ownership.
