Mk42/Project Dailymail

starting a new project for my son to replace his aging 9450 based system

Initial plan was for a budget upgrade circa £300 of a MM special mobo/cpu and GPU to get him gaming effectively at 1080p

Then I spotted this

now my son is a HUUUUUUUUUGE avengers/ironman fan so a quick bit of man maths later the upgrade budget was well and truly forgotten

proposed spec

Aerocool Xpredator Cube
800+watt PSU ideally In red with red/gold cabling
Gigabyte Z97MX Gaming 5 mobo
Intel 4690k
Raijentek Triton cooler (in red)
either 8 or 16gig or ram depending on what I can acquire ideally those lovely red Hyper X kits
and a MSI 280x GE

already got a 2TB storage drive and a 120gig 840 SSD sitting spare to fit as wel

First components (bar the SSD and HDD that are already here arrived

much disappointment as the case that's arrived is an absolute state, panels don't fit, colour match is a mile out side panel to top panel and the QC is utterly shocking.

have raised the issue with CS so hopefully get something sorted asap and get cracking with the build.

If I can get the same case without the issues in staying with it

Got a vision of how I want this build to look and the case is a big part of that

well case no 2 is on its way and due to arrive tomorrow.

fingers crossed we can crack on shortly.

Time to assemble?

I'll get my coat...

unfortunately not :)

need to get some (read all) components together first

I have so far

2tb HDD
120gig Samsung 840
case (arrives tomorrow)
280x gpu

still need mobo/ram/cpu and psu

well the replacement case arrived today, box in one piece

looking good so far

colour match is still a bit iffy

but I can live with that

gaps are certainly better though

not quite perfect though although 'll straighten this panel out easily enough

looks a good case to build in ;)

certainly going to be easier than my last small case build Project Hardon http://forums.overclockers.co.uk/showthread.php?t=18609687&highlight=hardon although that was just a through together, this is going to be special and themed to the nth degree

plenty of space

overall its not perfect but it only cost me £55 so I cant really grumble too much, the colour match between metal and plastic parts is awful although the actual paint finish is fantastic.

now to get the rest of the build in :)

not yet fully finalized due to some concerns about PSU and the reliability of the cooler but everything else is locked in

YOUR BASKET
1 x Gigabyte Z97MX Gaming 5 - Devil's Canyon i5 4690K CPU & Micro ATX Motherboard Bundle **£10 Saving** £303.98
1 x EVGA Supernova GS 550W '80 Plus Gold' Modular Power Supply £71.95

also got a Samsung 840 120 gig sitting spare and a 280x msi GE to go in this

roll on the wee boys birthday on the 22nd of next month, 31 days to go :)

The finish on he side panels is fantastic

Was showing a spray painted friend who was approving with his praise

Then they have the colours a mile out and other little niggles grrrr

quick test build this afternoon to make sure everything works

everything arrived woot

mobo

cpu a 4690k should be quite handy for gaming, certainly a bit beefier than the Pentium K I initially planned on using

stock HSF in place for now until the Triton comes into stock

psu

nice accesorys <3 cable ties

beefy enough for an eventual upgrade to xfire 280Xs

fitted with a bit of a faff

mobo tray is removable which makes life easier

stock cables are really poor and short need to hunt down some extensions

and It posts at least, although I don't have a usb stick at all to sort out the install (running off the previous win8.1 that is still on the SSD

sort that tomorrow but have to go to work now

To do

order braided cables
order Triton cooler
find some mobo header cable extensions(anyone advise?)

vinyl touches and some red lighting

neaten everything up overclock and game :)

some graphical horsepower has appeared

quick strip to remove the top bay to get the gpu in properly

ewwww

cables tucked

roll on some decent lighting arriving

the aerocool case is starting to grate on me now

side panel wont fit n because this is sitting down the side of the mobo tray

not going to be easy on the cable management front

that said

its fully functional albeit only at 3.9ghz and a gpu at stock settings.

I reckon i'm about half way there now with a fair bit of parts still to arrive

still to add

braided cables
hd audio and mobo connection extenders
2tb mechanical.
led lighting
and a good bucketload of patience to get it neatened up

My bank balance isn't keen on this circa £300 upgrade :)

Really taking to this now lots of stuff coming tommorow and I have day off and a fridge full of beer

233 top tip

don't come home after being at work since 4am and decide to get an hour of pc building in,

its not a bright idea

started off so well, quickly mounted the H100i after being briefly baffled by the adjustable feet on the backplate and wondering why it didn't fit for ten minutes

LEDs mounted, :)

and rad back out to mount the fans as I couldn't get a screwdriver in doh

oh oh bit tight going to be fun getting a 6 and 8 in there

now this is where it got confusing I forgot to put the fan splitter onto the pump

DOH

looks very tight

ten minutes swearing and cursing I gave up

gpu back out cable in then I realized I had left the fan cables too short by being a smarty pants and tucking them behind the screws, blast couldn't get the fan screws out so out came the angled screwdriver

which was the wrong size bit and I couldn't find a suitable one.

rad out for a third time fans removed and cables pulled out refitted HURAAH

then I hit a wall I don't know if it was lack of sleep watching babestation whilst building or just sheer stupidity I couldn't figure out how the fans connected

anyone see the problem here?

20 minutes later I eventually realized that that's a plastic cover to protect the pins that I needed to remove.

current state of play.

cooler mounted 357 swear words uttered and I've realized that I don't think i'll ever have enough cable ties to make a neat build

more tomorrow

in case anyone missed my grumblings in GD I did plan on building this all yesterday but those pesky chaps at the rainforest had other plans

Their idea of an AIO cooler
11000826_10153972256543636_8253386254643606904_n.jpg

quick project rename to Project Dailymail.

and in case anyones wondering wtf

http://forums.overclockers.co.uk/showthread.php?t=18673301

quick bit of temporary cable tidying until I get braided cables(going red/gold braiding Y0

and some finishing touches :)

it will do for now until I add a second 280x (got another MSI gaming edition sitting once I get a 380x or whatever AMD release for my rig to filter down to this

a 2tb hdd to add from the MM once it shows up and some braided cables
