I noticed a lot of oil residue last night on the underside of the engine tray, however as it was getting dark I did not have time to check, I am off work from Tuesday till next Monday, so I am going to get her up on the ramp this week to have a look.

I have done a self service before but with a MK4, I am planning on taking the engine tray off properly, and the engine cover, and having a good clean up to see what I can identify.

I am not sure how bad it is, I have only recently bought the car so I dont know if its a very slow leak, I haven't noticed a drop in the level but still want to check it out.

What's the best way to tackle a possible leak?

On a young car like that, my first thoughts would be insecure oil filter or drain plug.
Failing that, clean all the oil off and leaving the car running with paper under (obviously with undertray off)

It really depends where it's coming from mate.

Could be power steering fluid, could be spilt oil from previous top ups, could be a loose sump plug....

I'll get it up on the ramps then and take the engine tray off and engine cover as mentioned, clean it up and see if it leaks again, should have a better idea of where its coming from then.
