What video file play back options are there for MKV files on Leopard? The twist being the the files can be in up to 720p and have subtitles. The results I'm getting so far:

Quicktime + Perian : stuttery play back
VLC : Not great with MKV soft subtitle handling

This is on a 2GHz Mac Mini (2009) with 4GB

Can't say I've had any problems with vlc and subtitles. I have quite a bit of experience as my girlfriend's Spanish and sometimes likes English subtitles on hard to understand movies. Having said that, maybe it's different with mkv?

The subtitles are handled with out issues with other players other than VLC (on other platforms). VLC tends not to wrap them properly ending up with subtitles over subtitles and this happens with files from multiple different sources.

Have you started it going too early in quicktime? I have heard stories whereby you need to let it buffer for a longer period in quicktime when playing back 720p content. Just a thought.

I use VLC for everything, I wish when you paused the vid the subs would stay on screen though as sometimes i'm not quick enough to read :(

hmm, just downloaded Plex and i gotta say its very style over function at the moment which is a shame... i can't click on things with my mouse its all keyboard only which is strange, i've had it crash on me twice in the last 10 minutes and its not very intuitive i.e. wanted to add some movies but you can't do this through the movies section only the videos section...

so yeah, i think it will be good when they iron out a load of problems but right now it seems a bit poo :(

Its a media centre application it doesn't need mouse input.

I afraid that I would have to disagree with your summary. I found it pretty good given it's version number ... in fact surprisingly good.

Mouse doesn't work yes, but that's because you are not meant to use a mouse with it ... it works fine with one of those little Apple remotes and the only unintuitive thing I found was exiting from a playing video back to the menu.

Didn't crash on me at all either, (but given it's relative immaturity I was surprised at that).

I'm having problems with subtitles with the latest VLC as well, not with .mkv rather its my .avi ones! They simply won't play.
